It's been high on the list for a long time. And I'm stoked. Going to take some getting used to especially w/o live view. Yea...I'm going to need that. Decided to head down to the shore as the mountains didnt seem like they were going to produce the color. Not a bad first attempt I feel. Though very tricky. AND my polarizer is STUCK on the front!!!?? Grrr...anyone know how to get it off I just ordered some filter grips but they wont be here for 7 days.
In any case, here are the first shots w/ the new filter. C/C as always def encouraged.
Much thanks and sorry for the blitz of posts lately...been on a roll of sorts
Fun start with your new toy! From the looks of it your coastline is ideal for this critter and I like the way the water on the rocks almost gives you miniature waterfalls in the first two images. The colors in the second one are very nice - I like the contrast between the skies and the water in that one a lot.
Hairdryer on hot to help the metals "let go" of each other.
Here is my gift to you, my cheat sheet for the 10 ND ...
(next week I'll start posting some results from St. Martin, the Eddy pictures I have posted this past month were partially shot using the 10 ND as well )
Perhaps I'm the odd man out , Aaron , or it's a matter of facility of use --- but I don't like the cloud effects in any of these shots . With the skies cropped out and presented in pano format I'm much happier with the end product.
Now you've gone and done it Aaron. I had successfully pushed getting one of these filters to the back of my mind and you've moved it right back to the front again.
very cool stuff Aaron. I like 1 and 3 the most. I am fan of these effects. I am about to buy a filter like that. My first choice is the singh ray VariND with warm polarizer but it is very expensive. I am very happy with my B+W filters and I see they also carry a 10x. Which brand did u use?
Beautiful stuff, Aaron. I'm kinda with Adrian and Bart on the clouds' motion. I wonder how tough it would be to blend in a non-moving sky?
I do love the effect on the water in these. I enjoy my vari-ND a lot for water shots and coupled with a cp gets to 10 stops so Matt's tips will come in handy. Thanks, Matt.
Cool, those filters are a lot of fun to play with. These are all quite nice, but I'm finding #2 works the best for me; despite the motion in the clouds there's a certain sense of stillness to it.
As for getting filters unstuck, you can try putting a rubber band around the edge of one or both of the filters, to provide more friction when trying to twist them apart. This worked when I got my polarizer stuck to my ND, and a rubber band lives in my camera bag from now on.
Thanks all! It's quite exciting to play with...though the more I take it out I'm realizing the value of the very expensive vari-nd. In any case, I'm stoked about the filter...and was out today doing 1.5min exposures midday.
For the stuck filters...they magically unstuck themselves...as when I picked them up the next day they just came apart. Very strange. Though my cirpol has a very very lose metal/glass piece...odd?? How to tighten?
Barry - I have lots of ideas with using the filter for just the fg or sky and then blending the other. Patience! :-P
Matt - thanks for the chart. seems that it might come in handy...though it varies from the one i found from bksecret.
nikos - b+w...not sure if anyone actually does the 10stop.
I use one of those rubber sheets for getting jar lids off, works great, can find them at grocery store, just a thin square of rubber but grips very well.
Try using a pair of thise rubber circles with advertising on them to remove stuck jar lids. For some reason, they are hard to find. Push down on a flat surface and twist while pushing.
Get two of the large rubber/elastic bands and slip them over the two filters and carefully twist apart. This happens a lot because of different metals in filters and their reaction to hot and cold. I think your "loose" circular polarizer is normal. They have to be somewhat loose to turn easily. I have both of your filters from B+W and if I carefully thread them together they NEVER stick.
