I am new to this forum but I have been taking photos as a hobby since high school 6 years ago. I just recently bought my first DSLR in 2008 (Canon Rebel XSi) and I just receieved my second one (Canon 5D Mark II) last week. I have been shooting with an old Minolta SLR. It's nice switching from film to digital but I feel I have a proper amount of experience with film, which is becoming more rare nowadays it seems.
Anyway I want to post one of my very first pictures I took with my Canon Rebel XSi and 18-55mm kit lens. I am a mountaineer so naturally I love to take Nature and Landscape pictures.
This picture was shot in JPEG, at f/14, SS 1/340 and ISO 100.

The winds this day were holding steady at 50 mph with gusts up to 80-90mph. This is near the summit of San Gorgonio mountain in Southern California. It was dangerously cold and windy.
Here is a picture from Mount Whitney via the Mountaineer's Route. I just took this on November 15th 2009. This was early morning with my Canon Rebel XSi and 17-40mm f/4L USM lens.

I hope to learn and have fun sharing knowledge and photos as well as critiquing.
Welcome, Justin. Fine first post indeed.
Really love the 1st.....the blowing snow (?) is very cool.
Pretty cool take at Whitney, too, with the 17-40 you had to be quite a ways up the mountain!
Welcome Justin! Two great presentations in your first post too. I find the first intriguing because without reading your text one wouldn't necessarily know whether it was snow or perhaps steam rising and blowing around at first glance because of the warm tone the backlighting from the low sun gives the 'scape.
Dajavu...The more I look at photo 1, I see the similarities between steam and moving snow in that shot. The sun at this time of that certain day was perfect. It was giving perfect light without too much exposure. The clouds that day gave the sun a very cool mirage effect that also looked unique.
Pretty darn nice of Southern California's highest mountain. Been up there my self once. Summited in May but tried it once winter and didn't summit. You're making it look good down here in SoCal. Loving the atmosphere!
Did you walk up to the top of Muir? I regretted not doing that since it was so close.
Hope to see a lot more of these great shots you have Justin.

Steve...Yeah I was totally surprised by the conditions on the mountain that day. Pretty long hike huh? My legs always kill on that last mile returning to the parking lot.
I didn't summit Whitney that day but I did this last March via the Mountaineer's Route. I just wanted to go up and get some aspen glow
The first shot is just full of drama, great shot! You know, I lived 1 hr. from Whitney Portal for 3 years and never did Whitney, there were always so many other less crowded trailheads near by. Now I live on the other side of the country
The first definitely has an 'otherworldly' quality to it.......great shot.
The 2nd's a nice capture as well...though I think I'd crop some off the top. The story in this one's the tall sharp peaks, and a tighter crop would, I think, add emphasis to that aspect. Would make for a nice B&W also.
kwlash...Wow that is really surprising considering the beauty. I only do the Whitney trail in the off quota period so its pretty much uncrowded all the time. 5DII is awesome btw, I'm just waiting on much better glass to arrive. - Justin
