p.1 #1 · Pocket wizard TT1's

Anybody using the new PW tt1's (i think) for Nikon? If so are they reliable. I am mainly interested in getting the hot shoe mount to eliminate having to plug a cord into the camera. I have concerns because I heard that there were problems with the new model when released for the Canon camera's.....thomas

Just did a test session with Tony Hoffer in a parking lot by his house using Radio Poppers. He walked and I stood still and sent off a shot about every 20ft or so till I couldn't see him anymore, (300 yards) with no problem whatsoever. I'M VERY IMPRESSED.

My Pocket Wizards will be on sale Monday when I return home.

C'est la vie

Not fair, having fun with Tony in a parking lot and no one else is invited.

I've been debating this myself. I only have two PW's right now, but after reading Tony's write up last week he had me seriously debating which direction I wanted to make a further investment in.

Great , thanks. I will look into the poppers. In the 25 years I been doing this , these devices (both PW's and Qunatum RS's) have been my most frustrating pieces of equipment to get reliable results from........thomas

It's true. Sam was taking pics of my butt from 3 football fields away.

Seems like Radio Poppers have won this round, its a shame they are so expensive though.

+1. Compounded with the lack of built in master with Canon.

Pocket Wizards blow. They work great at times and sucked at others. The times they sucked it was so critical. That was indoor. Outdoor was another story all together. They are terrible. Anything over 10 ft and they render useless. So bad. Couldn't count on them for anything.

Hoff was at 200 yards here.

You guys must have crapped on your PWs. I've never had issues with anything. Across a football field? No problem.

RPs are the winner with stability compared to the new PWs Mini/Flex units. It's a shame they are so expensive, and further compounded by the fact that you need a flash on camera to use them. Just adds to the cost.

For a 1-light setup, consisting of (2)580EXiis and (1) PX trans and (1)PX receiver is $1250. Not terribly cheap if you want off-camera TTL control.

Although, you only need the one 580exII for on camera, cause can't it control say a 430ex in 1/3 stops (as though it was another 580).

Still not terribly cheap, but...

That's cause you live in the desert. No interference there. Do you even have electricity yet?

Yes, you could also use an STE2 to help on the cost. I bought the RPs in the first batch when they first came out (P1s). Wasn't fond of TTL, but the new ones look like they solved some reliability issues.

For the budget minded people, skyports have been awesome for reliability. Too bad the trigger won't lock into the shoe. Was able to do about 300 Feet @ 100% fire rate. 400 feet saw about 90%. I ran out of road before I cared to go further and decided that I wouldn't need to push that length.
