As to your pics, if the subject is all the items in the shot then all in focus works better for me. OOF in front or back only works for me if the main subject is in focus and the rest of the items in the shot are just background color, and/or bokeh, for the main subject.
These remind me that Gummi bears---what my now grown son used to call them--used to live in my couch. I spent lots of time removing cushions and then removing Gummi bears from underneath. <sigh> I miss those times!

Just some bad weather playing
Just to show I'm going round the twist- after shooting these (mainly to do a stereo see below). I realised I could get a storyline out of the first two shots but not the all in focus shot.
