p.1 #1 · Latest youth hockey - D700

If anyone's interested in checking out the latest game I shot with the D700 / 300VR combo, I'd love to have some feedback - especially in relation to levels and colors since I am in need of calibrating my monitor again after installing WIN7.

Cheers!

Hi DJ,
Nice job on those. Colors looks real good. Nice white ice. I found when shooting hockey that if I set my white balance off the ice the colors were always right on. That set up D700/300VR must be real nice for hockey if you are shooting from the penalty boxes. Thanks for posting.

Heya Jack... first off thanks for looking, and for checking my levels and WB for me.

Re the custom WB... that's exactly what I do too, usually right after the game before I'm shooting and before the zamboni hits the ice. I still shoot RAW and check it in post, because I don't think there's ever one WB you can set that works (1) all over the ice and (2) for all shots because of the crappy cycling lighting. Thankfully this rink has as good lighting as any amateur arena around these parts.

The 300 is perfect from mid-ice with no plexi... you get 80% of the ice covered between full shots coming out of the zones, action shots with several players in the corners, tight sportraits closer to the benches, and even goalie shots. I'd like to try the 200/f2 from this spot too, but generally the 300 is excellent.

Thanks again for the look! Cheers.

... O'dark thirty... love it.

I have been in love with the combo since I first put it together, no question. Pretty darn versatile setup really. I took the 300 and a 12-24 to the rink, and that's it. Covers off the game action, plus a team shot or two.

Thanks a lot for the kind words TM!

Andre, many thanks for checking 'em out and the kind words! ISO would be likely at 3200 for the majority, although I also shot for a bit at ISO5000, so one or the other, most likely at 3200 though.

CHEERS!

Do you think the 300mm worked well because of the age of the boys and the smaller size? Would you have shot with a 200mm if you were shooting high school kids or junior league?

Bah! Live through the Trenchmonkey... doesn't that guy shoot a 200/f2, 300VR, 400VR, 500VR and is waiting on his 600VR?

Nah, the 200 doesn't reach the corners and the goalie from here as well, plus the 300's extra reach allows me to get to the opposite end a lot better too. (Speaking strictly on FX bodies). From the corners, I'd likely want the 200 instead, but not from the benches / boxes. I've got the new 70-200VRII on order so I'll give that a try from the corners next time I shoot there. But from here, the 300's perfect on FX.

That's just too much and my circuits would over-load. I think you are right about his lens line-up. Must be nice.

And this is suppose to make ME feel better?

I'd be happy if I could get just one.

I'm right with you, Andre. I think I'm going to go for a 300f/4 used, someday, as my next lens. I don't see me getting a 70-200 any time soon.

Hi NOC

Yea, the 300 f/4 is the closest I will ever get one of the big tele lenses. I'm thinking I should be able to swing the 300 f/4 with a 1.4 TC around 2011. Hopefully by then it will be ubgraded with VR.

I don't know about you guys, but given my limited budget, I plan my gear purchases by year:

2010: 10-24 DX and a 2nd flash (SB900) with a stand & umbrella.
2011: 300 f/4 and 1.4 TC
2012: 85mm micro & Gitzo GT3541

After that it's save for a replacement of the D300. And at some point I have to slip in a bigger bag.

If I had my druthers, I would be looking at a D3s, D3X, the associated FX lenses and a couple fo the big primes. But what I can afford is better than what 95+% of people have, so I will be content with that.
