Paul, next time you shoot the storm crank your shutter down to 1/125th and tell me if you see a difference because you should.
Dave + Andrew as nice as the ambient may look, when yo combine it with cycling lights, high iso + noise, it makes strobes all that much better. from looking through the thumbnails on Dave's gallery link I could already see the cycling blue hues, didn't even need to see the full size image. And please do not ever shoot or post about shooting in TV mode inside an arena unless it has super amounts of natural light coming in. It's an arena, set it to manual and lock down the dials. Christ you might as well put it on the green box of sports mode if you are going to do that.
Andrew shooting strobes is a definite talent, and an acquired skill. When I first started shooting them I couldn't figure out why people would want to trade off 10fps for lights. Then I saw my images with the strobes and was hooked. It's a pretty simple routine, set your camera to iso 800, f5.6 at 1/250th, take a shot and see how it looks. If it is dark then turn down the f stop no lower than 4, if it is bright go up no higher than 8. If you hit either one of those numbers, adjust your iso accordingly.
I am going to go out on a limb here and say that your oof images were one of two things
1. the 1/125th could have something to do with it
2. you didn't have your camera on center point focus.
If you plan on setting up remotes using strobes, do some reading man. You thought shooting on strobes was hard, remotes are even trickier. To be honest, I don't even think you can shoot remotes on strobe with anything other than a PW, so you may be out of luck, unless you sit right next to it and use a hand trigger like you did in the posted game, which is kind of pointless as remotes are usually used to get a different perspective from where you are usually shooting.
Rick Normally I do shoot in manual mode. I am still getting use to the 1D Mk3 it is quite a switch from the xxD series. The shots I took from that game I was testing the Mk3 as I have only had it for about a week now.
Normally I will meter the light and lock the camera in from that.
But anyway looking forward to seeing your stuff from tonight. good luck with the remotes.
Thanks, I won't have a wireless remote until I shoot some games in December since I'm still waiting for my PWs to arrive and need to order a pre trigger cable. I think I may have fixed my lens. There was some space where the front element (not the filter...the 70-200 front 2 elements actually can be easily removed from the lens) was not fitting snuggly and was a little loose, just spent about 20 minutes moving it back and forth and seem to have it back focusing correctly. We shall see tonight. Also going to shoot with the 24-70 as well and try to get a shot or two of the huddle with the fisheye I'm renting.
