p.1 #1 · Metz 58 review

I've got my hands on Metz Mecablitz 58 AF-1 . I've read quite a bit about it; now it's my turn to write .
To me, the menus are not as bad as some people say...
Wink light?.. I gotta find a way to diffuse it
Overall, it's a great flash with tons of features. Recommended.

Here is my full review: Metz 58 AF-1 flash

Letting you know that my flash died after 18 months and there is no details how this could happen. I have Metz 54 for Canon for more than 4 years without any such dramas. It is an excellent flash compare Canon 580.

Most important question to me......does it swivel 180 degrees?

I have two of the 58's that I picked up soon after they were introduced. Never had a problem. Sh!t happens to some products in the production line; that goes for everything....even people

I agree with photogreen, people who complain about the UI simply was not used to it yet. After some initial problems in understanding it I can now fly through the interface. I picked up the 580EX II a year later and hated the interface of that....it's all about what you get used to using.

As for diffusing the wink flash thing, good luck. I haven't used mine in a while and don't miss it.

I've had good luck with the 58AF. The only thing I miss from the 54 is the quick dial in Manual. Plays nicely with 580's too.

Tom,

Yes. As I recall, mIne goes almost 360º, maybe 270º (3/4).
One thing I had to get use to was remembering that the remote sensor is on the top left shoulder.

Good luck.

The head on Metz 58 AF-1 can turn 180 degrees to the left and 120 degrees to the right (300 degrees total).
Cheers!

Spent some time testing the wink light, extended zoom, built-in white card...

I've selected 15 images for side-by-side comparison: Metz 58 test

Here, for example, catchlight card (left) vs. wink light(right) from 6 foot distance:

I'm not surprised at the sharper shadows on the wink light. That's exactly why I never use it. I find it more difficult to use with so many other settings on a camera and flash to pay attention to. In theory it's a great idea, but in use it hasn't been all that great to me.

You're probably right... I wonder if anyone has a good example of using the secondary reflector...

Does anyone know how to get the HSS to work when you have the 58 as master controlling another 58?

Another Metz 58 AF-1 test - frame coverage at all zoom levels, white card frame coverage, vertical head "spills"...
