Actually that's what I most love about the Iphone. It is a full blown NORMAL browser, nothing special needed like the neutered smartphones from other companies. You can visit websites just as you would on a PC.

Except that resolution is so low that you have to keep zooming in and out to look and browse...

iPhone apps are always faster... example, Amazon app compared to amazon mobile.
The speed is dictated by network transfer speeds.
That being said, considering the site probably uses an SQL database, the only people who could write such an app are those that admin the backend of the forums. So, you'll have to talk to them.
i have tested several apps side by side on the same network.. Applications built for the iphone not only have a easier interface and work a lot better, and they are indeed faster... another one you can compare is facebook mobile vs the actual app...safari on the iphone may work, but in my opinion id rather have an app.. just my thought but yes you do have a point!

Low resolution and no flash support.... their are loads of mobiles out there now giving a better mobile browsing experience.

Then that means those specific applications are faster than Safari. However, the ultimate determinant of speed is network transfer speed. Why not try another browser, like Opera?
Then again. This discussion is moot. No one on the board could make an FM app unless they were an admin for the board.
I don't think an app would speed things up much. What I've noticed speeds things up is streamlining a web site with minimal clutter and script. The images should be small.
I bet FM would be very fast as mobile device enable site if they just cleaned up their templates.
I don't have any benchmarks but pulling images from my website
www.michaelsessionsphotography.com
is at least as fast as my smugmug app on iphone (which is a pretty irritating app)
www.largelifephotography.com
I can see why facebook needed a mobile app as it's web version is extremely heavy with scripting, ajax, images, etc. Most sites don't need one.
