p.1 #1 · favorite sports photographer?

Hi,

I was wondering who inspired you guys to get into sports photography?

I'm thinking Neil "Muhammed Ali knocking the crap out of Sonny Liston" Leifer, but who else?

I might not even be anyone famous, it could just be a friends work that inspired you... (I started doing this because a friend of mine did it)...

I apologize in advance if this topic has been brought up before... Did a search before posting, but nothing turned up.

I don't want to give any one big (or bigger as the case may be -- ) egos here, but some of my best inspiration comes from the posts I see here. Sure, the SI guys are good, but what can they do with crappy lighting on Friday nights, or at restrictive baseball fields with fencing all around? Some of the posts here are as good as anything I see in my weekly SI.

Agree 100%... I know the big boys started somewhere, but I like to see the incredible photos from a field that has lighting that was paid for by players selling donuts/fundraisers.

One i've always admired was Patrick Murphy-Racey www.pmrphoto.com i was going to a lot of the Tennessee games and even bought his book. It really made me to shoot sports.

Dave Black for primarily sports, Vincent Lafloret for sports and everything else.

They key to them is the 'outside the box' thinking and implementation of how they get they're shots - as I'm sure others listed here fall into.

I'm with Hammy here.. Dave Black is amazing.. I saw him do a seminar at the expo last year here in New York and he is just a down to earth guy with great knowledge of photography. Here is his website.. http://www.daveblackphotography.com/index.htm
Take a look at the "workshop at the ranch" link. I also like Joe Mcnally alot. He's the funniest guy I ever listened to talk about photography and produces some amazing results also.

Rick - your wedding stuff is amazing, as is your hockey stuff.

Used your shot of the IceDogs for the HS hockey team that I shoot. Your blog has some awesome stuff on it.

Another vote for Rick then! Hope there's some kind of kickbacks associated with these votes Rick!

I give a ton of kudos to the guys on this forum, but one guy in particular that I really miss around here that really inspired me for youth sports and particularly hockey work was Dustin Weins of KC Sports Photography. His youth sports work was unbelievable but what really set him apart for me was how helpful he was to anyone that asked for it, and how constructive he was with his feedback.

Dustin, don't mean to talk about you in past tense... Hopefully you're still around lurking. Cheers.

to be honest I don't know who half of these people are you are posting lol

I get inspired by every single person I have seen. I take notes on images I like on forums and try to replicate that image or make it even better.

Just like I taught myself to play golf I taught myself to shoot photography

I have NO idea who any photographer is out there and could care less but the people here are the best IMO with all the help they give.
