p.1 #1 · Yet another harlequin

The classic harlequin colour scheme - fairly orange rather than red. Sitting on a rhododendron leaf.

Beautiful creature, Brian. Wonderful capture. I see many more of the Asian variety lately and don't think they're quite as pretty.

Thanks Kenny - not sure I understand all the comment- this is one of the Asian variety.

Out of interest a couple more from yesterday - both fairly awful shots but do show more melanistic forms going towards red on black rather than black on red. They also show the influence of flash angle and background brightness on the flash reflections

What I meant to say is that I think the native? species are much prettier than the Asian species. Wish I could spot some like your last two.

Ah see what you mean - must say I think many of the Asian colour/patterns are rather nice.

Very nice photos, but have you ever tried using a polarizer to cut the glare down? I find it especially distracting on the last one.

Thanks

Well I did play with polarisers ages ago but basically they do not work with flash unless you cross-polarise with polarisers on the flash as well - this results in a rather large light loss (at least 4 stops).
The difference between the first 3 shots and the last 2 shots, is simply because I was shooting with a much lower lens and flash angle in the first series- this helps to reduce the reflections. In the last 2 shots I wanted to capture just the carapace colour/pattern rather than the bug itself so was shooting at a much higher angle.
