I am taking my Nikon D300 and 17-55 for Alaska cruise next year
What would be the best telephoto lens (Nikon 70-300 or Sigma 50-500)??

Rent a 200-400 f4 VR, seriously. Once in a lifetime trip

Second the 200-400. Likely add a 1.4x TC and a monopod.

Agree with all of the above and would add you need the ball and cup to give the flexibility and maintain the sturdiness on the mono pod while holding all that weight.
