I still don't have calibration hardware, but I do follow this man's advice, and my colours are very accurate. It's a lot to read, but worth your time, believe me.
I just got the X-rite i1 Display 2 and like it very much. I had been using the Spyder2 and the i1 seems to have fixed some issues I was having. Very highly recommended. I hear good things about the Spyder3, especially the hardware and for the ultimate, go with Color Eyes software.
