p.1 #1 · Wave wanderings

From our long day (and evening) at the Wave in early November, Dave, Deb, Robyn and I enjoyed our wanderings in search of classics and new images, in varying light. Dave (Icypeak) has posted some great shots, here are a few offerings:

#1 Classic view of the vortex

#2 The Ribs in early morning light

#3 The Fins with some Fauna

Oh, I'll throw this one in as well: a self portrait in the Vortex

Great to see your Wave shots Bart. The light in the last one is quite interesting. I would guess that this is in the morning when that region is still in shade, but the sandstone across the valley is in sun? Nice work!

Nice series Bart, I like the first as an abstract. The third is pretty cool also. Nice anchor in the foreground.

Thanks, Ben. The vortex shots were around 11:30 am. I had been wandering about in the early morning for the "blue light" early morning shots on the fins and ribs; then went down to the boneyard. By 11:00 I met up with Dave and Deb, and they said there was still some glow in the vortex. I think they had a little better glow earlier.

Here's one with first light hitting the boneyard.

Hugh: Thanks, I was thinking of "hugh" when I was shooting in the blue light -- of your pastels and ocean scenes.

Fstr, thanks. I just had to take advantage of the receding lines.

Beautiful images not only because of the location but mainly due to your eye. It is so easy to get carried away with the classic shots of such a well known location. I'm impressed with your ability (not just with the Wave) to see the composition that truly captures the location. It's very inspirational. The first image does that very well. Great eye! Jarv

Great series Bart, really like #2 & 3 for their colours, I thought it was all red rock at the Wave....another place to add to my list!

Very nice imaging from a popular place. Your early pinkness is quite pleasing. Everyone's point of view within the Vortex is unique as well as familiar. I need to go back!

Wow this is incredible, the post work really works well here, awesome composition and a beautiful exposure on all.

I'm loving the 2nd one the most Bart. It's just so simple and less conformative.

Great job on these beauties, Bart. I especially like your angulation of the lines in #2, and the restraint in processing to keep the colors subtle and understated. I had the glowing vortex in my mind for the past 2 years since I was there last, and am glad I staked it out to find the peak of the glow. It looks like it was still going strong when you headed down there, and great idea of shooting the self-portrait (I would have gotten up from my nap to shoot it if you had asked!)

Great shots. And especially great to see the size of the vortex compared to a person. Well done!

Bart

Just stunning love the comps, textures and patterns you have captured here, really didn't realize just how steep and uniformed shape this area is beautifully seen Bart

Great series Bart. The color in these is amazing, especially #2. The third one is also very interesting. I like your close up look at these. Well done.

Thank you for the kind comments. It's hard to miss in the Wave, especially when the light is good.

I do have to self-report my error above, my description of the "fauna" in number 3 should be flora. I think the only fauna in the wave was the jackass we saw in #4. Though Robyn did find a real "boneyard", probably a coyote kill zone, filled with large bones way back near the jagged cliffs to south-west.

Dave: I shot the first one and the self-portrait with the 16-35 on the 5D. See what you can do when you carry 3 bodies? : ) I should have put the third in front of me, so it looked like i was taking a picture of SOMETHING !

Neat images Bart. This place was definitely on my "bucket list" before I saw your shots and just jumped up higher on the list after seeing these.

The one that really jumps out for is the third one - not the usual image of that area but definitely a neat scene to see highlighted here.

Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Your self portrait gives a very surprising scale to the vortex, especially for one, me, who hasn't made it there yet!
Really fine stuff, Bart. All are delightful, but the delicate colors in the 2nd and 3rd are just wonderful!

Hey Bart,

Cool stuff here. Looks like you had a blast. My favorite is #3. What a kind of mind blowing angles on that shot. Very cool! The last one from the boneyard is really cool. I am so glad I found that the last trip, I can't wait to explore it some more next time.
