p.1 #1 · Wideangle Ghost Question

Hi All-

Just bought a 14mm 2.8 to pair with my D3. I get a recurring ghost in the lower left corner of many shots.

Is this normal?

I am aware that wides tend to ghost, but always in the same spot?

Does this lens need repair?

Thanks!

Matt

Now that is weird. Is the lens clean--no smudge (front OR rear)? You are using the lens hood always, right?

If it is dirt it would be on the right side corner of the portrait image.
Did you try other wide angles as well?

something is strange and inconsistent: the ghost is always in the lower left corner, in portrait and landscape mode !!!
That means NOT at the same place depending on camera orientation !!!
I am puzzled to say the least.

Does this happen with all lenses? What if you turn the camera upside down?

Do you wear a shiny watch on your left wrist? It could be a reflection off the watch on to the lens.

Most plausible suggestion yet. Would be confirmed if (1) only wideangle and (2) disappears without watch.

A very remote possibility- from INSIDE the camera, or a light leak into the camera. (Had that happen to me once, a long time ago).

Put camera in a black bag, surround the lens too. Take some shots. That should tell you if you have a light leak.

Could be the flash. I've sent it before.

Could be a really slight misalignment within the lens also. If the case, it will be noticeable with slight variations of sharpness in each corner.

I had this lens before; I thought it could be a smallish alternative albeit on the wide end only of the 14-24G. Boy, was I wrong; it was definitely prone to flare although I don't remember mine was that bad like your pictures show. Yours showed some flaring even on that brick wall shot . The 14mm setting of the 14-24mm puts this prime lens to shame. The notion about prime lenses being better than zoom can be thrown out of the door as far as two lenses concerned. I sold the prime lens shortly after finding that out. I would send the lens in to Nikon for evaluation and eventually adjustment/calibration.
