I already have 5D as my main landscape camera and am extremely happy with the IQ. I’m planning to get a smaller camera for hiking and travel purpose. I wanted to know if IQ of 500D and 50D is the same? If I understand correctly the sensor is similar and I will be working at base ISO most of the time.
I do know the difference between all the whistles on the cameras, what interests me is the end result and perhaps viewfinder to some extent.
I owned both and found the 500D to have better IQ then the 50D.
The 500D didn't seem to suffer the "Softness" that the 50D's images seemed to produce, and the high ISO performance from the 500D was also better then the 50D.
I really liked the 500D, it was a great little camera, but I sold it to help pay for my 7D. If I could have afforded to keep it, I would have though! Definitely one of my favourite cameras I've owned.
Yeah, the 500D is much smaller and lighter then the 50D. Paired up with the 18-55 IS kit lens or even the new 18-135 IS or 15-85 IS, and you have yourself a very nice light weight camera, perfect for hiking and travelling.

The 50D is (roughly) the same size/weight as the 5D. The 500D will be smaller and lighter.
Yes, that is indeed true. However I have seen images from 50D (a friend of mine owns one)...and if 500D IQ can be as good then for sure I will prefer 500D for hiking/travel.

I'm thinking of getting a 500D and getting it converted for IR shooting.
Wouldn't the 450D be a better bet. its much cheaper and still has Live view which I can see is a real bonus for IR work.
Mind you the 500D could do IR videos
