Sitting in the pressbox (football) this past saturday, a few guys were talking about how many pictures they had taken during the ballgame. One guy said he had 2200 pictures and another man said he had 1800. For the whole ballgame i had around 430 images, out of the 430 i submitted 95, the two guys were shooting for the school and together they posted 81 on the schools website.
So how many do you normally shoot a game and what's your usual keeper rate (i know it varies by sport and level of play)
probably around 400-1000 for me
including on field, sidelines, off-field
I think my number, besides varying for the factors described in a few posts above, also varies wildly according to environmental factors. Early in the HS season, lighting is good and I can get a lot of really nice shots of the guys warming up in beautiful light. For some kids, this is the only time they will be on the field, and if I can set it up right, they look like they are seeing some action, so I may load up on a bunch of these shots for those parents. As the season progresses, and the lighting gets worse, my numbers go down considerably as I still get some pre-game stuff, but they don't look as nice as those images lit by that last hour of sun.
So some games might be 800 shots narrowed down to 300-400 and some might be 500 narrowed down to 250.
Also, depends on the size of the bands and whether or not the teams have a lot of wild fans or not. Lots of crazy fans can make for some good images and a large band may add a pretty big number to the shots per game. Conversely, if it is raining and the band does not play or is not in uniform, the numbers come down.
Really, the numbers vary according to the job I am doing (who needs to be covered) and whether or not I can get nice images or not. Also, if I am covering the same team for the 2nd or 3rd time, then I won't need as many of the pre-game "stock" type photos, so the numbers come down even further.
Normally, I'll post between 250-to 350 images of a game, with some variation. I just looked at my stats online. I have 10 HS Football galleries and 3325 images posted.
Hello All, Not getting a lot of sale trying to figure out why.??
Just getting into the T&I / Actions Sport work.... While I get the paid T&I stuff I also go out and do action photos of the sport for the season at no charge. Hoping to sell some action shots.
This past Sunday football I had two games Championship games..shoot a lot about 700 images total... but not hearing much from the parents... and most say they dont have time to look at all my photos on my site...
so do you think I am over posting to many photo's ? general shots and some keepers?
I told one mom that I want to buy better equipment so that I can get better photos of thier kids.. then try to sell them photos to them..
I don't know many people that will sit and go through 700 pictures to find their kid. I've never tried selling images online, i won't shoot it unless i get paid up front.
When shooting D2 Football, covering everything, I may average about 350-400 total with a decent keeper rate. Basketball may have about 250 total ( mens and womens) as I am tied to a strobe. I still think like a film shooter in basketball as I want little work once I get home.
I know some who will shoot 2500-3000 (!) per game and get basically everything. because a camera has a high frame rate, does not mean you have to use it everytime. Ah, the age of digital where a photog does not have to think about each frame.

I post a web gallery with highlights... pick 20-30 from each game. Make it easy to browse.
Catch their interest and provide a simple link to the ordering page where they can find those highlighted pictures, plus the rest (weed out the weaker shots).
Parents tell me every week that their kids love to check my website the day after their game to see if they made my "Highlights from the Game" gallery.
My Saturday morning first time venture. 280 pixs in a 1 hour biddy basketball game seeking an acceptable action image for a wall cling. D3 at 9fps but limiting total burst length to 3. Most often only the second or third image in the burst is the best mechanical. These little guys are allowed to dribble - pickup the dribble and dribble again. Very different.
Normal for ALL HS games - I try and stay below 400.
I upload close to 100 most times and have made my website so you can go from picture to picture in about two seconds. AND I never tell how many pixs are in the collection and I never show a contact sheet that allows pick and choose viewing. Visitors seem, via google analysis, to look at most of the pixs using this technique. Go to my website and then to the pix index page and pick a game to see first hand how it "works". Show the image fast and they will look at a lot of them in a short time. Average stay is about 8 minutes.
I've been shooting (D2) aroound 450-550 for football and that includes sideline shots. Last weekend I shoot close to 600 with no band or cheerleaders since it was an NCAA playoff game.
I'm limited to what action I can shoot since I only have a 70-200 2.8. Baskekball starts tomorrow and I expect to see 400-425 shots per game.
This is an interesting tread... It seems the average shots from the members here is about 400-500 per game. I'm just wondering what your ave. time frame is once you dump the images to your computer, weed out the non-keepers, post process, size, crop, and adjust the keepers and upload them for sale. I think this would be even more interesting.
The last NCAA Football game I shot, I had a commercial assignment as well as shooting game action. I shot upwards of 1600 images. I submitted about 150 stock images and sent about 125 images for the assignment. I had more usable shots but they were just getting redundant.
The NCAA Football game before that I think I shot about 900 images and sent in 165. However, when I am shooting for an editorial assignment when I am only looking for a couple of dozen shots and a few "plays of the game" I shoot 300 or 400.
For NCAA basketball, with strobes I shoot between 60 and 80 shots a game and submit around 40. Without Strobes, I shoot around 300 shots a game and submit around 50 or 60.
One high school football game, I shot about 2000 images, kept about 500 images, and made over $2000 in photo salesfrom that game...so it all depends on your focus.
It takes me about an hour to look thrrough about 1000-1500 images. Then it takes me another hour or so to crop all the ones I keep. (more if I keep more than a couple of hundred). about 30-40 mins to caption.
But, I have a mac pro (quad core processor with 5 GB of RAM) and open about 30-50 images at a time to crop. if I have to de-noise images I run a batch first, while I run to the store for a soda.
Yes, it was a smart ass comment. Why? Because this is a completely ridiculous thread. We are talking about people from about 20 different shooting backgrounds all saying how many they shoot and why. How does this honestly help you?
Shoot how ever many frames you need to in order to accomplish whatever you are there for. Not that difficult to comprehend.
At the end of the day the only thing that counts is quality not quantity.

Some people may be reassured that shooting 400 pictures is not out-of-the-ordinary in order to end up with 100 sellable photos.
Some find it interesting that photographers better than us actually take more pictures.
Some of us are impressed that pros like yourself can show up, press the shutter once, end up with the SI cover, then go home for the week.
Why does this thread upset you so much? Sure, some threads may be of more value to you than others. Ask Fred for a refund for this thread. He's got a money back guarantee for "completely ridiculous" threads.
Hmm...let's see, I shot nearly 15,000 images one day for Hammy. Shot more than 11,000 on another day and I know all of those went home on a disk to every competitor. Oh wait, you're talking about football?
Well, there was the HS football game at a field with about six lights, in the rain/sleet, 40 miles from home with no access to Internet and I had 30 minutes to shoot then get to a computer to send images under deadline. That time I shot a total of 50 images and had two--literally, two--that were usable. That was all I needed, though.
The key part of Jeremy's post is that this varies by the sport and level of play...AND by the needs of the client.
Time to process? I set a goal for myself after each football game (D1 or NFL) that I have my initial sort complete and the first batch sent to the client within one hour. That typically involves about 1,000 images narrowed down to 60-80, with maybe 20-30 or so being sent with the first batch. The timeline for D1 basketball will typically be the same, except I'm going through anywhere from 500-600 images.
I shot a D2 volleyball game last week and think I ended up with about 300 images from a four-game match and sent in five. Kept many more than that, but those were the five needed for the client.
I have absolutely no clue how many I delete; for me it's just not worth worrying about "keeper" rate. I either get the shots or don't; meet the client's needs or not. If this stuff was brain surgery or rocket science I wouldn't be doing it!
I don't get why people are starting to be so rude/hateful on this forum. If the thread is ridiculous then dont' post in it, it's that simple. Your comment is the same if you asked for directions and they just told you to drive til you got there.
I shoot football (at night) and lacrosse (day or night) for the HS website and a local online news site.
For football, I shoot 500 per game. I edit a bit during dead space and come home with 250 frames. I post about 50-70 on the HS site and submit 3-5 for the online news.
For lax, I shoot 700 per game and cull to about 100 for web and 5 for online news.
I'm an amateur, so my keeper rate isn't as good as you guys!
I'm impressed with the work that I see here. I'm inspired and learning from all of you!

its the fact that when i want to see people's work and half of the posts on the front page are stupid ones like these it makes me mad.
I want to see people's work. i could carealess how much you shoot.

Does anyone else ever ask them self why they are shooting pictures at all in the 1st quarter? I don't think I've ever actually used one.
For HS football, which, I think, is what the OP was talking about, the first quarter can be the best time to shoot. I am thinking of those games at the beginning of the season when daylight lingers for a while before surrendering to the stadium lights.

How much less could you care?
(sorry ..grammar nazi..it should be "I couldn't care less." Common mistake)
