p.1 #4 · AF speed of 7D with 300/4 for BIF and sports?
Thanks for the bump tanglefoot47 and for M Vers suggesting the previous thread re 1D2 and 7D performance. The thread was helpful.
I still hope to find someone with direct 7D experience mounting a 300/4L IS for action shoots to see how well the combo performs, especially given the limitation of a max f/4 aperture....

I have used a 300/4L non-IS on my 7D with no issues, if that helps. My impression so far is the the 7D focuses about as well as my MkIIn. Except for the increased reach, performance is similar. But the much larger files from the 7D take longer to handle in uploading to computer and in PP.

I shot several hundred bif shots with my 300 + 1.4- Focus was much faster than
my 50D. The 400 5.6 was killer on that camera- I returned the copy I had as I was
not happy with IQ in general- May try again in a few weeks.
YMMV

Shot them side by side a couple of weeks ago at an airshow, my 7D and 1D3 next to my friends 1DMkIIn. His impression as well as mine was that the 7D was at least equal with several instances of the 7D being faster. Use it all the time with other tele's and I am delighted and think for all intends and purchases it stands up quite well to my 1D3's. It is in a very different class than all other Canon 1.6 croppers.

I exclusively use the 7D and 300/4L (non-is) for sports.
I, however, upgraded from a 30D rather than from a 1D2, but I absolutely love the results I am getting. Again, my base for comparison was a much lower quality camera. It tracks and locks well.
All the images (except the last 3) on the front page of my flickr were shot with this combo if you want to check it out.

I owned all the xxD bodies but the 7D is simply the best. It locks on fast and tracks well. I cannot compare it to the 1D bodies. I call it like shooting fish in a barrel.

These BIF photos are awesome
The AF tracking is important in what I'm doing. I'm leaning toward 7D to replace my 1Dmk2 for shooting sports in HS dungeons.

Hey Zenon Char,
You are certainly versatile in your ability to wield a 7D with the 300/4!
I am a big fan of Dfine but I am surprised at how well you were able to suppress the noise at ISO 12,800. You were able to retain good microcontrast and sharpness at the point of focus yet the bokeh didn't turn to mush....

Yes that does help a lot. I made an 8 by 10 print of that first image. Printed it from full sized 16 bit Tif and it did not look too bad. Not fine art if you know what I mean but the parents were thrilled. Then again parents are thrilled of any images of their kids. 12,800 is great for when you are in a pinch. It was not my preference that night but I had no choice. Sure beats my 50D.
