People say the Sigma 24-70 is vastly inferior to the Nikon 24-70, and yet that the CA Sony 24-70 is equal or better than the Nikon 24-70, but the Sigma is close to or equal to the Sony... Thoughts? And where does the Canon 24-70 factor in?
I got a feeling that you'll hear a lot of opinion on this one, but the fact is this lens is pretty new and there are not many people who have actually used one.
FWIW I had the Canon mount DG macro non HSM version and I thought optically it is more than decent. But my copy front focuses severely at the wide end, less so at the long end (lots of Sigma zooms I've used exhibit this property). But once it nails it is pretty sharp even wide open. The HSM version is a different optical design.
