Hi-
I am trying to decide on the best monitor to use for processing my photos. I know the 24" LED mac monitor is good but there has to be other ones as good if not better. Looking to spend around the price of the 24" mac. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks,
Nick

For $450.00 (US Dollars) more I'd get an EIZO CG222W : http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=EIZO%20CG222W&N=0

The DELLs that have IPS panels are very good, yet cheap.

e.g. 2209WA, U2410, 3008WFP.

Be careful though as Dell change the panel type, yet leave the model number unchanged.

The Dell U2410 and the HP LP2475w are both quite popular IPS panels that don't break the bank ($530-$600). Both calibrate very well (see www.tftcentral.co.uk). However, they both use LG panels and there are numerous reports of green/pink color cast issues. I just got my Dell U2410 last week and really like it, however the bottom left has a greenish tint and the top right has a pinkish tint. It is primarily noticeable when viewing a gray background. However, it can also be seen against other solid colors to varying degrees. It is something I think I could live with for general use but for photo editing I am not so sure. This issue isn't resolved with monitor calibration and is an issue with the LG panel itself. Some people's monitors are really bad, others are lucky and have gotten one that doesn't appear to exhibit this issue. Just something to look into before purchasing either one of these two.

If you can afford it, I would definitely recommend you spring for an NEC (or an Eizo) such as the 2490 and be done with it. Also be sure to budget for a decent monitor calibrator (i1 display 2 for example).

BTW, you'll also need to determine if you want to work with a wide gamut display or one that only displays the sRGB colorspace.

The color cast is a gradient. It is strongest out towards opposite corners and blends toward the center of the screen. The Dell comes from the factory pre "calibrated". Well, the calibration guarantees that colors will be within an average delta E of 5. Unfortunately that really isn't that accurate and does nothing to guarantee color uniformity across the entire panel. tftcentral.co.uk was able to callibrate their screen to an average delta E of 0.3 which is quite excellent. Other companies, NEC for example, will verify screen uniformity on their nicer monitors by checking 25 different points across the screen. I am still trying to decide what to do myself. At times the color cast is quite noticeable and at other times it really doesn't seem all that bad.

1). Here is a shot of a gray screen (background of Photoshop). This represents what it looks like to the naked eye. While the difference between the top right and the lower left is subtle it is still noticeable during normal use.

2). The same shot with a 50% saturation boost to exaggerate the issue some.

3). And finally with 100% saturation boost. An obvious extreme that doesn't actually represent the visible difference but it does show the underlying unevenness of the colors.

OK i read this

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?p=1034824130

Scroll down and there is a mini review. The response time bit is particularly dissapointing. As is the color gradient (which seem to be a common issue with eIPS panels).

why is it hard to respect an OPs request for price range? if he's in a $500-600 range and seems to have a clue as to what is going on, recommending $1200-1500 monitors doesn't really help.

The display he's looking at is an $800 display. If you amortize the cost over 2-3 years their is not that much difference the Apple LCD and the Eizo CG222W..
