p.1 #1 · IS or not IS

for the purpose of taking pictures of RC (radio control) cars would a lens with IS be better than one without it?
Those are very fast little cars, I always use the camera handheld with no tripod with speeds like 1/1000.
I'm considering buying a EF 70-200mm f/4L USM, questions is IS or not IS?

thanks in advance

doesnt matter for sports.

if you are planning on panning then get the IS

The IS won't help with moving objects but a SS of 1/1000 will.

If RC cars will be the only use for the 70-200 you won't need the IS.

IS is always nice to have on board though so if $$ are not a concern I'd say go for it.

The 70-200 f/4 IS is a VERY good lens.

But I guess you already know that

Hi,

Thanks for your responses, it's a difference of 400€/600USD

Image quality is about the same in both lenses?

I was told by many of my motorcycle racing reporter friends to turn of the IS when you do panning. Especial if you are shooting with a slight tilt of the camera to get some different angles. I just wonder where you are coming from with your statement. i personally dont have a IS lenses so i am also just curious about the whole IS myth ( if i can say that) on panning. thanks

agreed on IS not working well with panning, I shoot motorsports, with a lens with IS, and turn it off completely, even in Mode 2 it does not play well with my shooting style. Its nice to have for those times when you are not panning, and I do use it then, and when not shooting motorsports. if you can afford the extra $$, then by all means, have it for those times when you need it.

thanks for the replies, I ordered the non IS version.
If I feel the need for IS I can always sell it and buy another one in the future
