Hi, I'm using an Epson 3800 and the printing (colors) is really flat compared to what we see on the computer screen (Mac). As I understand, these printers can be calibrated so it's a perfect match to the screen. Is that right? If so, how do we go about it?

have you calibrated and profiled your monitor first? printer like the Epson come calibrated and profiled reasonably closely for Epson papers already. if your monitor isn't calibrated and profiled, any statements you make about the differences between the two are meaninless. if your monitor is calibrated and profiled then what are you using to print to the printer with and which profiles?

Also, you need to use the profile for your paper. In PS print dialog box, let PS manage color and select the appropriate paper profile. If not using Epson papers (profiles come with the printer) get the profile from paper manufacturer.

Also, make sure that you are in the right color space. If you image is in sRGB, make sure the printer is not in aRGB in the print driver settings dialogue box.

I have an Epson 3800 and I am using custom printer profiles by www.cathysprofiles.com. They cost $35 and are well worth it. I tried the canned profiles that come from Epson that work with their paper and the custom profiles are worth it. As previously mentioned, you need to have your monitor calibrated as well, and you may need to calibrate at a lower brightness level to match your prints. I have my monitor calibrated at 95 CDM and that works pretty well.
