Last year the Nikon SB-900 had just come out and I was in NYC at the Javitts Center for the PDN Photoplus show. Asked at a few booths, but everyone wanted $489.00 or so for the flash. I was bummed, too rich for my blood.
Later in the day, I went to a small booth (can't remember the company) where my partner was buying some stuff. Saw an SB-900 box in the glass case, asked half-seriously, "How much are *you* getting for that?" The guy looks, says, "$419.00", and I said, "SOLD!" It was brand-new, never touched.
And for some icing on the cupcake, a few minutes later, while standing by the Nikon exhibit watching Joe McNally go through his spiel, I hear Joe mention David Hobby (from Strobist.org) and Joe points in my direction! I glance around, and Hobby is standing next to me. I pull my flash out of my Nikon shwag bag, tap him on the shoulder and say, "Hey, Dave, you're to blame for me having 4 SB-800's and now buying this SB-900, so you have to autograph it for me!", so I went home with a deal-busting flash in a box autographed by David Hobby! A good day.
