I just had a step-mother in law order about $200 worth of prints. All "traditional" style family portraits. I hated every one of them. It's what she bought. Are you in this to make money? If so you'd better be doing at least some traditional. IMO.
What was it that you hated about these images? You took them.... is there anything that could have been improved to where you would be proud of them? You have some beautiful work on your site, including the formals. And you really, really need to up your prices. (ps - does all images mean all culled images, I hope?)

They were just boring. People standing and looking at the camera. Of all the images I did that day, she wanted the ones of four people standing next to each other looking at the camera. Not the emotion of the bride exiting the church with that exuberant expression on her face.
I like some of the group stuff Sam does, and some other people here, and we did some more fun stuff, but this particular bride wanted her family to stand in a line and smile. And those are the prints they ordered.
We did shots I'd be "proud" of, but those aren't the ones this particular person ordered.

People standing in a row is not what is meant by traditional.

Did a 30 page album design yesterday, literally half the pages were pictures of family groups. There chose about three true 'capturing the moment' type shots in the entire album out of 55 pics. Bored me to heck to design it...

This is a thread about traditional photography, not linups of people looking at the camera.
As working professionals shouldn't you guys know the difference?

My style uses a lot of traditional shots...I do everything possible to not make them just boring shots of people standing there...
I think that is why I am booking a lot more weddings than most photographers in my area. A lot of photographers in my area try to do more of the PJ type photography but they are not very good at it.
As those of you who are good at PJ know It is Very Difficult to do Well.
I make every effort to mix in some more modern type shots...but that is a work in progress....getting better at it I hope.

The contemporary edgey stuff gets them in the door and booked.
The traditional stuff is what sells (for the most part). Same is true with seniors. The cool stuff gets the kids in but mom still gets the traditional wall portrait. I don't get offended that they buy my traditional stuff over my more creative work. I sell them what they want not what I want
