p.1 #1 · the "post your early digital images" thread

Faced with the daunting task of re-cataloguing my thousands of digital images into a new system, I cam acroos many photos taken with a number of digital cameras over the years and thought, hey, why not start a thread with pics from earlier cameras.

Here are the first of mine, taken with the following:
1. MAVICA FD-88, 1.2 mp (my first digicam circa 1999
2.OLYMPUS C3000Z, 3mp circa 2001
3. OLYMPUS C5050Z, 5mp circa 2002

Very cool thread idea. Those Olys were really something but it shows you that the photographer is still the most important part of a good image.

I'll have to dig up some shots from my S10.

dasrocket,

Re: your 3rd pic. As my skier buddies always said, it ain't the skis - it's the knees. Wonderful image.

Great idea. I've only started on 2006, a little by accident but that's a long story
These were with a Olympus e500, my "student camera" and first serius photography tool.

This one is with the kit-zoom:

And these with the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 (a bit strange focal lenght on four-thirds but still my favourite lens at that time):

This is from my last photography session with the e500 before I got tired of the noise and crop factor and switched to a Canon 40D:

I went from film to digital in late 2004. Here is an image from 2005, the oldest one I have saved in my archive:

Oh oh. Oversharpened and noisy and leaning a bit. I recall I liked it, printed it A4 and had it on the fridge door for some time. I was trying to do industrials with my Minolta A2.

All your early ones look so good!

back in those days, I always travelled with a film camera loaded with Velvia or Provia, knowing that digital was totally not up to snuff for IQ.

I greatly enjoyed the Nikon Coolpix 900 (my first digicam) but, on reflection, it was a PITA to use and images were miserable with poor dynamic range and color rendition. The 1.3MPixel limit was less of a problem, and the macro mode was great. I paid $1K including a whopping 48MB memory card! Here's an early pic from 11 years ago, before post and after:

Great idea!
These images demonstrate that it's not the equipment that makes or breaks a photograph.

My first digital camera was a used Leica R8 with DMR, and this is one of my first photos made with it:

I beg to differ. Poor ergonomic design prevents me from making some photos, flare, fugly bokeh or poor color quality will make the difference between a photo I'll keep and one I delete.

The best camera doesn't save a poor photographer, but a good photographer will soon find his limits with poor gear. It takes skill and good equipment to achieve optimum results.

My first digital camera was a Olympus E-20n. Didn't use it much at all. Disappointing IQ, weird interface, considered it more of a toy than anything else. Continued to use film, instead (still have it though, somewhere, should have unloaded it long ago). First "serious" digital was a Contax N Digital (I won't go into the wonderful aspects of that camera here - but I would give anything to have that camera with a modern sensor).
