p.1 #1 · Hunting Dungfly

I was hoping to find this critter with prey, but there are so many wasps hunting in the same area that everything was skittish.

Tech specs: Canon 40D (F13, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens (@1.5x) + a diffused MT-24EX (manual mode 1/32).

A handsome devil, isn't it? Your camera placement gives excellent detail, John. Also like the texture in the bloom? it's perched on. Just outa curiousity, did you also take this shot using E-TTL?

Kenny

ps Got one of my lights built last nite. Some quick grab shots with the one lite show me that I'm getting more light onto a white coated lead pencil that I would've blown out with my old diffusers. Thanks for all the help.

Great composition/positioning of the fly: I love the way all those hairs really stand out against the black background. I am in awe of your ability to consistently get such wonderful focus & dof.

(*If I was feeling braver than usual, I'd suggest that a weeny, teeny, tiny crop off the right and bottom would remove the bit of knackered petal in the bottom right corner which drags my eye a bit from the subject. But I'm not feeling brave enough to suggest that to Mr No Cropping Zone .. so I won't )

Thanks Kenny, Mark, Budz, and GillR

@ Kenny: Nope, manual mode 1/32 power. I'm pretty sure I took all of the 1x to 1.5x shots in manual mode. E-TTL has a real tough time with some of the scenes I shot today and I didn't feel like messing with the FEC. So I shot one of those little yellow flowers, adjusting the exposure until I got close thinking that it would be the most reflective object no matter what landed on it.

Happy to help on the new diffusers

Hi John,
You're certainly 'on song' tonight.
The black backgound, is that a result of low flash level and aperture, or
is it a black card behind the subject?

Thanks Bruce and Michael

The background is just due to light fall off -the background is just too far away for the flash to illuminate it.
