p.1 #1 · Winter Hoverfly

Doesn't look like winter...

Tech specs: Canon 40D (F13, 1/250, ISO 100) + a Canon MPE-65mm macro lens (@1x & 1.5x) + a diffused MT-24EX (manual mode 1/32).

Both excellent, but second frame steals the show IMO. I really like the faces on these guys...almost have a human look.

Beautiful light & astounding detail.

I think there's a slight green cast in the first?

Thanks Kenny, Mark, and GillR

That flower has a kind of green cast to it, so I'm often surprised when I shoot it and it looks yellow.

I'm obviously on a roll for getting "suggestions" not quite right today ....

Actually you had a valid point -it's just that particular flower. Bad enough that it's yellow and plays hell with the light meter, but at the end of the day it sometimes takes on a greenish cast. If the critters didn't like it I'd never photograph them cause it's like shooting in a room with a mix of florescent and tungsten lights -you just can't win...

You guys and your Canon MPE-65mms makes me wish Nikon would make something like that, but from what I hear, technique plays a huge factor in this type of work. I have a long way to go. Very nice!

Lovely captures- a marmalade hoverfly light looks oddly similar to a single flash shot ?

I had one flash head at 11 O'clock (using it like a key) and it was on a Kaiser adjustable flash shoe. So the light from it was hitting the hoverfly at an angle that mimicked the sun. The fill, at 2 O'clock, is the light source that looks like a flash (due to the angle).

You can see the two o'clock light reflected in the eye, but
only just. . . . incredible diffusion. (second image)
The eye is matt, but three dimensional.
