I found out there was going to be some big surf last weekend so I planned an outing to Santa Cruz. When I got there I was surprised to find the 2009 O'Neill Cold Water Classic in full swing. Man, those guys can really surf! Quite incredible.

Not the best conditions for picture-taking as the sun was way to the left of where I was set up and the surfers were - for the most part - going away from the sun. I tried to get "sun in the face" shots when I could, but there was a lot of backlight.

Here's a series of what I consider the better shots. CC appreciated.

Nice Dave.

I was there 9:00 - 11:00. That low sun was difficult. I stumbled onto the event and really enjoyed seeing top drawer surfing.

Thanks Des. Rags, I was there from sunrise (hoped to get a sunrise shot but it didn't happen.

) until about 10:00. I was about 1/2 way between the contest HQ and the lighthouse. It's pretty amazing what these guys can do with a stick of foam!

Wow, those are great photos. Definitely going to have to make it out to Santa Cruz sometime soon and shoot some surfing instead of mountain biking.

Gavin I haven't figured out yet if there's any season where the light is good for Steamer Lane. I'll keep working at it, though. Sure is a pretty spot to spend some time, in any event.
