p.1 #1 · Team Sweden U20 National Team vs. Carleton Ravens
Hey Fellas,
Long time 'lurker', first time poster here.
Here are a few shots from an exhibition game held at my University between Sweden's U20 National team (the one that will be playing in this years IIHF Junior World Championships, to be hosted in Saskatoon & Regina, Dec. 26th to Jan. 5th)
2. Sweden defenseman Mattias Ekholm making his way off the ice after receiving a pretty nasty body check. Ekholm was drafted #102 overall by Nashville Predators in 2009. http://www.smugmug.com/photos/702971657_wf3xi-L.jpg
3. Sweden defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson shoots around Carleton Ravens forward Derek Wells. Ekman-Larsson was drafted #6 overall by Phoenix Coyotes in 2009. http://www.smugmug.com/photos/702941173_VMj3f-L.jpg
5. Lastly Swedish defenseman David Rundblad delivers a crushing body check to a Carlton Ravens player. Rundblad was drafted #20 overall by New Jersey Devils in 2009. http://www.smugmug.com/photos/702944853_jLRgB-L.jpg
The rest of the gallery can be seen here http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/10202545_cuX4d/1/#702957247_c4c4K-A-LB for those who are interested. There are a few more pics there of Adam Larsson (who is being rumored to be the next Victor Hedman, so far Larsson is right on par with Hedman's development and stats.)
Thanks in advance for any comments and for checking out my photos.

Thanks Ian.
I should have prefaced this gallery with a bit of information. All of these were shot through the glass and the rink throws a blue-green light on everything. On my Mac at home these pictures looked slightly cold, but now that I'm on a school comp. they look WAY worse. I will have to do some adjusting once I get home again.
I've been struggling a bit to nail the WB at this rink, lighting is pretty good for a Uni. barn (I usually shoot iso 1600, F4, 1/500, 2/3 overexposed) so there really is no reason I shouldn't have the whites spot on. Typically I custom WB off an Expodisc but even still the shots come out very cold/blue/green.

I'm wondering if you're not using the Expodisc properlly. When using an Expodisc, make sure you're pointing your lens at the lights ource. In your case, through the glass up at the lights in the ceiling. A little tip. Make sure the exposdisc exposure is in the middle of the histogram, for bang on WB's. I use Expodisc exclusively (for now) it it works charms if done right.
Also, you can try this, I just bought the Datacolor SpyderCube (http://spyder.datacolor.com/product-cb-spydercube.php) You would place this on the other side of the glass and take pictures of it to come up with a custom WB. Once you know your WB in Kelvin, you should be able to manually dial it in to test.
I'll post my results when I perform the same test at my rink, over the next few days.

Thanks for the tips guys, I appreciate the responses.
DJ, no worries about the fix on that photo. I appreciate the advise alot actually, I've kept an eye on your hockey posts for awhile and now always keep in mind to push the over-exposures to get the players faces right and not worry about the ice.
I actually mucked with the colors of the original photos quite a bit and they look decent on my MBP's screen, so I have a feeling I know the culprit here (along with a bit of user error im sure). May have to re-calibrate my color profile for the Mac.
Paul, thanks for the pointers on the expodisc, I will double check next game to make sure that my exposure is in the middle of the histo. and not pushed out to either side.

Hey man, it's pretty cool you got to shoot this. I got to shoot Mattias Ekholm over the summer in Nashville for the Predators prospect camp...thanks for posting

No problem Wes.
It was really just pure luck, I shoot the majority of the sports at my Uni. and the moment I heard that the Swedish kids were going to be playing our varsity team I jumped on it.
Figure if I keep working hard I will be able to shoot in some of the pro barns, one day
Actually last year our girls team played a game at Scotiabank Place where the Senators play and I got to shoot out of cutouts, which was pretty fun and different.

Yeah those cutouts are pretty tricky sometimes, I ALWAYS get a good frame with the cutout halfway in it, therefore ruining the shot. oh well. 9 days out of 10 I would rather shoot these international teams than NHL or any other league for that matter.

Ha! Agreed,
Yeah going into the game I knew that if the Carleton team tried to skate with the Swedes we were done for. I was impressed that they adapted to the physical play rather quickly (they have a number of returning players from last years jrs, which helps). About 1/2 way through the 1st the Carleton guys just eased off the pressure/physical play and that's when things started to shift in favor of the Swedes. It was awesome to shoot and a few of the SWE goals were absolute lazers. I'm really looking forward to the World Jr's again this year. I think they have some serious potential to take it this year. I was at the gold medal match last winter in Ottawa and it was pretty crazy.
