I saw this done the other day and wanted to give it a try. While I was getting my children ready for some other photographs I took some practice shots to check the lighting, It is not perfect, but I believe a good picture for me to try an Out of bounds shot. It took much longer than I expected but has been fun.
I know many things I will do different next time, but hey, half the fun is getting there.

Try using a a little softness on your brushes to avoid the hard transition on the edges. In photoshop I usually knock off 5 - 10% hardness depending on brush size
