p.1 #1 · Southwestern Classics (4)

Going along with some recent posts from the Southwest, some members had asked and mentiond trying some black and white conversion. Well I spent some time to go through a few images before moving on to the next batch of processing. The light that we had really lends itself well to color and black and white, but I also think the subject matter has a lot to do with that as well. Sandstone is a really unique rock to photograph, as it full of various shapes, lines, textures, and values, all of which really shine in black and white.

Any and all feedback welcome. Thanks. Billy

#3 is my favorite of the bunch. It includes some lovely and subtle effects of light and is further removed from the typical images of these subjects. Nice work.

These look really nice- I especially like the third as it accentuates the branch/tree (the level of detail retained in the shadows seems perfect to me too).

Only the last doesn't quite work for me, as the tones of the branch get lost in the sandstone without any color there for separation, particularly around the highlights.

Great set though, and I'd love to see more- reminds me that I need to explore b&w conversions more.

best,
k

I like them all and think they are better because of the b/w treatment. Nice job. Scott

Really nice B&W work on each of these. I agree that 3 grabs me the most, as the rest are fairly familiar scenes. The stick in #4 feels a bit contrived, but OK, still looks cool beautiful!

Wonderfull done, Billy. I really enjoyed these in color. Your conversions are excellent, and have me leaning toward the b&w version.

Thanks everyone. I'm a bit surprised as to how these are going over. I felt they worked pretty well, but overall, I think I lean towards the color versions. Never hurts to work on converting to black and white and trying something new.

Bill: These are very fine b/w conversions. They allow you to really feel the dimensions and shape without the distraction of color (and this from a color guy). Very well done. (By the way -- we were just there and your stick is still there.)

Seriously? That's pretty funny actually. I found it not too far from this spot, but gave it a little "nudge" so it worked a bit better

Very nice. You were lucky you could get the entry pass. The idea of converting them into b&w works very well here.
