Hey guys,
I just picked up a new lens, the Canon L 300mm f4.0 IS. I usually shoot with the Canon L 70-200 f2.8 IS but I wanted to try a prime lens and I couldn't afford the 300mm 2.8. The problem I had shooting with it today was where should I stand for football. I was shooting a middle school game today and I missed a great shot that my 70-200 would have been able to get. I did get the QB rolling out to his left and throwing but when I came back to pick up the receiver the 300mm was too close. Is there any thing that I should focus in on when I have the 300mm on my camera and just forget about certain types of shots? I would take any advice at this point.

first thing to remember, you can not get every shot. You will miss some.

Second, a lot of football shooters, even on the peewee level, will shoot to camera bodies. A long lens on one, and a short on the other so they do not miss as many of those too close shots. Imagine the shots you want to get and try to put yourself in the position that you think you will be able to grab them from.

Right now I only have a 50D. I use to also own a 20D but it went dead on me and it would have cost nearly $400 at Canon to revive her. So I have been looking to pick up a Mark II but I haven't found the right one yet. Thanks for the advice.

Yep, two bodies is a minimum if you're serious about shoot sports, and even then you'll miss shots. It's just part of being a sports shooter. If you don't have two bodies, just take the 70-200 with you and switch out the lenses when the action gets to maybe 25 yards or so away.

Maybe this will give you something to think about.

Thanks Scott. I ended up switching off to the 70-200 f2.8 when the action got inside the 15 yard line. Since they were just little kids there was plenty of time between plays to switch. And there wasn't much wind that I was worried about the dust on the lens. I am going to search more videos on youtube.
