p.1 #1 · Canon repairs...

Sent in my 1dmkIII and a couple lenses for calibration and check over to Canon Aust

I received a quote back for my 24-70 stating that it requires new collars and a new rubber mount.

I knew the rubber mount was screwed, but I'm not sure what they mean by collars...can anyone expand on what part that is? (I haven't had any luck googling it)

Oh, the total for the repair is $449 (AUD)... $337 labour, $71 parts and $40 tax... I think I might just pass on this 'repair' if its not necessary... I never had any problems with the operation of it...

This is just a guess but ...How old is your lens? There is a part (or parts) that are part of the shell on the lens mount area that have been redesigned over the years...these parts might be the 'collars' that are described on the work order. I believe if you have one of the older lenses and it needs work on any one of those areas, you have to replace the 'collars' to the new style.

The lens was bought in about early-mid 08, so it's not that old...

I've contacted them by email asking for a contact number or for them to call me to speak with them about it, So I can find out exactly what they want to do.

for those who may be interested in what this was, here is the response from Canon...

Canon Repair - EF24-70L
The technician has quoted the lens for collars and the rubber mount.

The collars have been quoted since the lens appear to be loose when extended. The extended portion of the lens should be secure and stiff.
This type of service requires the lens to be dismantled and the calibrated after parts have been replaced.

The rubber mount at the back of the lens, appears to be damaged, possibly due to wear and tear. This rubber mount is a seal to assist in preventing liquid from seeping through between the lens and body.
The rubber mount assist the lens' weather proofing.

QUOTATION:
Upon inspection found unit needs new collars. Quote to dismantle unit, supply and fit listed part. Reassemble, clean and test.

wow, thats really expensive, but your 800 5.6L is a really expensive lens, so I guess its fair that the labour is expensive

Jun Zhou's got it right, I think. The rubber mount is for the 800mm not the 24-70L. So the labor is split between the lenses. hmm, the weird thing is, you think the rubber mount on the 24-70L is screwed, but Canon thinks its ok actually.

That's just the labour for one 24-70 lens. I do not own a 800 5.6L. If canon want to send me one back with my repairs thats ok by me.

I think what has happened there is that its a generic part across most sealed lenses, and the computer system has it entered with that description which it automatically pulls and puts into the quote.

the rest of the gear in with it:

Canon Repair - EOS 1DIII
Unit will be serviced if required under warranty, therefore no charges.

Canon Repair - EF70-200IS
Unit quoted for repair.
QUOTATION:
Upon inspection found unit needs optical elements to be adjusted. Quote to dismantle unit, adjust as required, reassemble, clean, check and test.

Labour $ 164.00
Sub Total $ 164.00
GST $ 16.40

Canon repair - EF16-35LII
This unit has been calibrated, as it was less than the repair limit of $200.
Total cost for this service is $84.70

Oh I see, sorry then. I can't provide any further insight on collars and rubber mounts. I see you're in AUS, but here in the States, I know some people (there are a few threads) go to the third party repairers directly (sub-contractors of Canon) and get their repairs there for cheaper and just as legit. So perhaps a 2nd opinion on the repairs is in order?

The only canon repair in Australia is at the head office in Sydney.

There are no other Authorised Canon repairmen that I know of.

I wouldn't trust any other third party camera repair shops here either, they are few are far between and the last time a friend used one his lens came back with a deep gouge on the rear element which they denied doing.

I think we just get screwed over here... lol... we even still have the old CPS.
