excellent series kirk. good job with the mud crawling on the dowitcher and sanderling shots. i really like the grey color tones. the fog and grey color tones works great to isolate the subjects.

When I saw the foggy surroundings as I was driving in to work in the morning, I was thinking that I wouldn't be missing much by having to go in to work. From the look of your post here ............. Boy, was I wrong!
Those Sandpiper shots are outstanding. Love the low angle and the color rendition. and speaking of colors ................ the Curlew in golden light was also outstanding.
You're making me very resentful of the fact that I'm stuck going in to work, and that I also will not get a chance to shoot this weekend because of other committments.

When I left the house Tuesday it was clear as a bell and I was drooling over the golden sunrise glow at SJWS. As I got closer I could see the marine layer and just hoped it would lift soon. This is my first experience shooting under these conditions and I'm so glad I had the chance to do it, although certainly not conditions that we hope for, I'm very pleased with the results. We just have to make the most of our limited shooting opportunities.

The Curlew was one of those moments of being in the right place at the right time... and I was ready.

Thanks for the good words, I really appreciate it.

See you soon. Kirk

I'm liking the monochrome look you achieved in the first 4 frames Kirk, gives a great feel to the image Nice of the Peli to blow the grey out Nice underwing view in #7. Sweet techs on the Avocet and both Browns look terrific with great poses!!! Fav is the Curlew, great perspective and the light is delicious

Two different feelings from the first and last shots, Kirk, each one with its own character and with the last shot being an explosion of colors and lighting. They all have good techs and detail are really nice with 8 and 11 being my favorites.

Kirk I would like to know common EXIF data as shown in these shots. I undersatand that the D300 is avery good low light/high ISO body. Where do you commonly find ISO values that work for you. Thanks & take care. Bob

Looks like a progression from low light to nice light to me Even though you knew some of these wouldn't have any real 'snap' to them it shows that you took your time and worked on angle and comps. Fine use of what light there was Kirk I liked the first six as a series, nice job on all of them.

I like #8 most, very appealing to me, tonal range and pose and separation and reflection. Pelis are cool, and the light of the last one is pleasingly warm though the angle is a bit awkward for me

Good stuff buddy!
Karl

Yes indeed, I had the whole spectrum of light to work with this day, lots of fun.

My intent in 1 - 6 was to convey the very gray, drab light that I was shooting in, to capture good detail for the conditions and to show the very subtle color that was barely visible that morning... and of course, to get as low as possible.

I had initially cropped #8 Avocet as a landscape orientation and just didn't like it very much and almost didn't post it at all. I loved the color and tones and didn't want to give up on it so I decided to try it as an 8X10 portrait crop and found a very pleasing image that I like very much now.

I know what you're saying about the awkward angle in the Curlew image, I would've loved to be lower but it's not possible from some of the high trails at this location.

Thanks for the thoughtful critique buddy, always very much appreciated.

Great set Kirk.
As one progresses through the pics its as if the fog is lifting and the light is winning the battle for clarity ending with beautiful clear Pelican ones and then a lovely golden one of the Curlew!
Well done.
