p.1 #1 · Self Portrait

The 11th of November my fiance and I will be engaged for a year. So I thought it would be a good idea to shoot a self portrait for her. I was kind of going for an Indiana Jones feel which I think I accomplished.

Comments and Critique welcome.

Thanks for looking.

You have some nice colors in there, I just wish you left the car at home and where leaning against a tree or fence instead. As it is now the car steals to much attention from you.

I have to agree with Droon. It is a technically great shot with very nice light, but it resembles a car advertisement too much. Maybe if it was an old land rover or similar. Having said that she will just see you and that's all that matters.

Hello Naude,

This is a BRILLIANT example of a Self-Portrait.

I like:

the light
the color
the pose
the prop (good use of a vehicle in the scene)
the garments (wardrobe including the hat)
the composition

Well done!

You pulled off an SP that many would love to have. This has the look of a high-end commercial photo shoot.

My Impression of the subject: He is independent, confident, loves the outdoors, and adventurous. He has a casual confidence that comes from experience.

Well done.

I bet she liked it too.

Hey...I wish I had a SP just like this. Hmmmmm......

Maybe when I make it to SA, you could make one for me.

Thanks for posting it here. One of the BEST SPs I have seen in a LONG time!

I am not sure why a couple of posters don't like the prop. I think the SP is VERY well done!!

Steady Hand echos exactly how I feel about the shot. Good work.

We should use this shot as an example of how to do a SP.

Great self portrait. The colors and contrast are beautiful, but the truck is a bit shinny for the Indiana Jones look Bring the mud out

Thanks everyone for the comments and the bit of critique which I can actually defend. The pick up is part of the shot because I just got it and my fiance loves the way it looks.... especially with me in it.

I do however agree that the truck might look a bit better with mud all over it just to round it off. Unfortunately there isn't time for a re-shoot and I am pretty sure I wouldn't get a sky like that again!

Thanks again for looking and sharing your thoughts!

excellent composition (in addition to all of the praise above)

"it looks like a car ad" has to be the best compliment you could get !

Thanks. The sun was actually behind some clouds most of the afternoon which worked perfect for me. One SB900 with warming gel in a softbox camera right. SB800 with warming gel camera left. Triggered with on board flash on a Nikon D300 with a 35mm f/1.8 DX lens and then processed with Capture NX2 and nik color efex pro 3

This is great. You should submit it to TOYOTA and I am being serious.

Good job. Great colors, and I don't mind the truck in the image. However, the way it's framed makes it look like the truck is hauling a huge bush in the back.

Hahah I actually agree and was waiting for someone to bring it up. However I tried a few shots without the tree in the photo and it just felt empty. The way it is now I feel the tree is an anchor point when first seeing the image then the eye moves over the truck towards me before you notice the very bright cloud in the background which leads you to notice that stunning sky...... but that's just me.

thanks for the info! when you're 'in the field' like this, i'd be curious to know what softbox you're using. looks VERY natural!!

Nice shot and a fine SP.
Some would rather not have the truck, but it's your choice. I guess the truck is a part of who you are - maybe the hat too.
Love the colours and the scene. Good proportion of scene/you. Many get the person too small.

Here is a shot of the setup for you. We don't get big brand stuff here in South Africa and when you do it costs a fortune. We do however have these cheap chinese imports which works fine at about $45
