p.1 #1 · Hockey Portraits

Had to do some T&I work for the local university, and wanted to put my own twist on things. Didn't have too much time for shooting & setup, so I figured I would put my twist on the images during post. Anyways, here's what I came up with for a bit of a non-traditional/edgy look, C&C away.

I think the poses are great...but the skin tones appear they should be on Twilight.

From the OP
"so I figured I would put my twist on the images during post. Anyways, here's what I came up with for a bit of a non-traditional/edgy look"
It was the look I was going for.

I think the skin tones work. It follows the ice theme & works very well with the background (which looks like ice).

The over the shoulder shots are nice but my favorite is the first one. Did you do a corresponding group shot? Would love to see it.

I really like these - hockey is a rough and tough sport and that is what these images portray!!! Great Job.

On a lighter side - I will be doing something similar to your Ice Dogs portraits this weekend for the hockey team that I shoot for. I will post some samples when all is said and done.

Kathleen and Andy, thanks for the comments.

Andy, didn't know that was you till I hit the triple-w and it took me to ss.com. How's things down in Michigan these days, why'd you bail out on us?

Not that you need it, but if you do drop me a line and I'll tell you about the IceDogs setup.

Cheers // rick

Rick - I have not bailed - I have just been really busy with working a full time job as a teacher, trying to get the photo thing going - getting into shooting weddings - and balancing life with two children in diapers and an aging father. I have also not been shooting sports a lot.

I am going to give the portrait a trial run on Friday night - I will post a few samples to have you look at and we can go from there. I might be shooting a bit of the Whalers this year!!

I dig 'em... if edgy is what you were aiming for, you hit the bullseye... very cool.

I like these a lot, especially pose on #1. #2 right (goalie) is not a flattering pose to me. Becasue of all his equipment the pose makes his head look smaller than it really is.
Otherwise I like the post processing etc.

What did the cutomers think?

Thanks again for all the comments guys.

After having them up for a day and looking at them again, here is my take on them.

1 - My fav
2a - If I was more prepared would have had a water/glycerine mix to add sweat
2b - switch poses with goalies, his gear as mentioned by rosenmertz is too bulky
3 - player should be looking at the puck not me
4a - see 2b
4b - 3rd fav pose
5 - 2nd fav pose

Clients are super happy with them, as they were not expecting anything like this. They simply expecting color corrected images with a white background (yawn). They will still be getting the originals, but are really excited about these. Most will be blown up to a 3'x2' poster and hung throughout the arena's and school.

Andy - By bail I meant leave Niagara, what brought you to Mich?
