p.1 #1 · Vignetting of Lee filters on the Zeiss 21 mm F/2.8?

Hi

I will probably buy the Zeiss ZF 21 mm.

Momentarily I use the Singh Ray ND grads for Cokin P because my largest filter thread size was 77 mm. Since the ZF 21 has a 82 mm thread I'll need to change my filtersystem.

Now I am wandering what to do.

First will the Lee foundation filter holder not vignet on the Zeiss 21 mm lens. Should I prefer the Cokin Z pro filter holder?

Second will the Lee resin filters provide the same quality as the Singh Rays I now use or should I spend a little more and go for Singh Ray. I also am tempted in the reverse ND Singh Ray provides, anyone uses this?

Thanks

Peter

I use the singh-ray reverse ND grad 3 stop (daryl benson model) almost exclusively. It won't darken the sky overall as much as the regular 3 stop (galen rowell model) so bear that in mind.

You could try handholding the filter in front of the lens, or get into the habit of bracketing and blending. The Singh-Ray filters are great though and it's nice to only have to work with one image and be able to do everything in the RAW processor without resorting to photoshop.

If you use the Lee foundation Kit - the one for 4x6 GND's & you're using 4x6's - you can purchase an 82mm adapter ring (B&H - Adorama) they also have an 82 WA- wide angle - it has a recessed thread to bring the filter right up to the lens casing. You shouldn't have vignetting with the WA - if you do - remove one or two levels of the filter holder clips. (there should be a stack of three) - I never use three & seldom two filters at one time.

The Singh Ray reverse(s) are my most used filter for typical sunrise/set activity of the landscape that I encounter. A set of 1-3 soft Lee's may be a good value. I have a set of 1-3 soft & 1-3 reverse and use all of them. If you have too much filter - it will darken skies & false color clouds pretty quick.

Your P - Singh Rays hold their value & should resell easily. The Lee holders and kits are available fairly often on Ebay.

I use Lee filters on my zeiss 18mm. All I have done is to remove two of the slots on the front so there is not as much protrusion out. This leads to no vigneting on a 1DsmkII
