p.2 #1 · Killing the 1D mark III

I think you have everyone confused. In your 1st few posts, it seems as though you were comparing the price of a new 1D3 to the price of a used 1D3.

BTW, if someone wants to sell their 1D3 for $2,300, they will need to do so in the near future.... because after the 1D4 is fully released, the 1D3's will likely push under that price and perhaps closer to $2,000 or even less for well used bodies, which is when I plan to swoop in and get a heck of a deal on a perfectly functioning one with 50k+ clicks.

Mark

And then just take pictures, shoot shoot and shoot. Enjoy the 1d series......

Yea you got the new sales price wrong. You can even get 1ds3's for under $4500.

$3662 on Amazon right now for a new one, not $5000. $2300-$2400 for the used version of a several year old camera design does not seem that far off to me.

And what is exactly new in new design model? mpx or video?

Agree, I wouln't sell mine mk III for such money, I would better let him die when his time is over ... What you saw is toy collectors changing their gear from one to toy to another

Yes, I was completely lost until I realized that the OP was not comparing the price of a new 1D3 to a used 1D3. The phrase "They selling it for $2,300/2,400 and the new one is around $5,000.00" doesn't specify what the new one is. In the absence of saying "1DMIV" its reasonable to assume that the OP meant 1DMIII, which is not the case.

How does the price of the 1DMK4 matter? The new price of a 1DMK3 is 3,500 or so. This is the "new" price that drives the price of a used 1DMK3. If the "new" price of a 1DMK3 was under $3000 the price for a "used" 1DMK3 would be under $2000.

I will wait for the Mark 6

Since when is buying any kind of mass produced camera an investment? Everyone knows cameras will drop in value and digital cameras even faster. Really, if this is what you are concerned about, you should have done more research and realized that due to the III's tarnished reputation, resale value for this camera will likely drop faster than previous 1D models.

By the time you wait for the Mark VI, your III will be worth <$500 and the VI will probably be introduced at around the $5K price point, as all 1D cameras have (give or take $500). Then you'll have to scrape together almost $5K... My advice would be to get a lightly used Mark V.

Pure and simple, if you love your 1D III so much, no one is forcing you to sell. As for other people, they can do whatever they want. If you are not selling your 1D III, why worry about it. You mean your used 1D III worth more somehow? You can value it at $4500, but it's up to the buyers to decide how much they want to pay.

Meanwhile, in XXD camera land the previous one is always superior to the latest one. I can't wait for the 60D to come out so people will start appreciating the 50D.

Anyone think there might not be another xxD camera now that the 7D is here?

+1
I remember paying $1500 (plus tax) for a 10D in 2003...I still have it and it still works great but it's NOT worth $1500 anymore.

The OP is right that price is the 1D3 is getting killed. I think people are comparing way too many different price points and part of the blame is Canon changing the pricing on this camera so drastically. Previously, the two comparisons where simply: The price of the new model, and the price of the old at it's Release Date. The used price was mostly based upon those factors minus condition of the unit. The confusing part is when Canon lowers the price so drastically. Now, the 40D was NOT dropped 40% when the 50D was announced, was it?. ...As for the used market, the 1D2n was not as low as the 1D3 is now at the same time in it's product cycle when it's just about to be replaced. Taking in historical price drops when looking at the used market trends, the 1D3 is taking a drastic hit.

Canon may not realize this but the farther down they allow the 1D3 to be sold at retail the more they are going to hurt the 1D4 sales. Companies have in the past just taken them back from retailers to either sell them to corporations at a discount or destroy them so they don't kill their own market at retail.

No, but it wasn't worth only $750 in 10/2004 when the 20D was released. It was worth probably closer to $1200. That's the OP's point, that your 10D didn't drop nearly 50% when the 20D hit the shelves. The 1D3 is taking a hit that hasn't been seen before.

Actually it was. The price of a new 1D mkIIN, after the introduction of 1D mkIII, was $3300. Interestingly, a few weeks after the introduction of 1D mkIII, the price of a mint, used 1D mkIIN, went up to $2700 (or sometimes even higher). The lowest price of new 1D mkII was $2800 in Jan 2008.
A refurbished 1D mkIII is selling for $2650 these days.

You mean like my $3000 5D (Orig price $3200) that sold for $1400 right after the 5DMK2 was announced.
