So I will caveat this with the fact that once the light dropped off outside, I was back to 4fps...fwiw, I also had the Hi ISO NR off...most every feature in a manual mode except the AF on the lens....FW 1.1.0 update....

Hope this issue get's resolved with a FW update!

I have not been able to duplicate the mysterious burst rate drop-off. Shot a game last night - ISO 3200, Manual mode, 1/500, f2.8, RAW, AWB, in-camera NR disabled, ALO disabled, firmware 1.1.0 installed - and the 7D kept going at it's normal 8 fps.

What am I doing wrong? or right, lol.

The equivalent ambient light level is around ISO 3200, f2.8 and 1/100 of a second for proper exposure. You had an f2.8 lens on so the fact that you were getting a proper exposure at 1/500 second means you had five times the light above the level at which the FPS will drop.

Let me make sure I get this - it's the same as what I was shooting but the shutter speed must be at 1/100, or slower?

Not that the shutter must be that slow, but rather the lighting conditions would require that for a proper exposure.

Huh, it is so easy to replicate, and everything has been described. In manual mode, (both AF and exposure), settings unchanged, point the camera towards something above the brightness limit, it gives 8 fps, point it towards something darker than the limit, and it slows down.

Not quite video, but a pictorial demonstration of the problem - it is real.

just looked in the 7D manual and it mentions the slowdown in certain lighting conditions..its made here to be some sinister plot ...

asking for further proof,different methodology isnt implying a lie...the Manual does say a slowdown in FPS may occur which implies NOT always occur
in certian lighting conditions..

Well, at least it's a lot better than the competition... Nikon claim 8 fps for the D300/D300s, but they actually top out at 2.5 fps.

I had really considered a 7D but the frame rate issue is a problem for me. I shoot in gyms where no flash is allowed at ISO 6400. F2.0, at 1/500s or less. I often have to push the exposure a stop in post but I need to keep the shutter speed up. It would seem the 7D will not give the 8fps I would like to have in the lighting I often have to shoot.

now how do you know that...this is as silly assertion that Canon screwed PRO photogs with the 1dmk3 A/F issues of which Canon did their best to fix

Hi Atsi,

Just got my 7D few days ago and while testing the 8fps in low light last night, I noticed this dropped bursts problem. I can easily duplicate the problem as described here although It only drops the speed in Ai Servo mode. Using Ai One shot in low light doesn't have this.

I was a bit surprised that nowhere in the web forums noticed this problem except here.

more likely it gives it a better shot to not just toss a mess of OOF frames at you

and certainly sports will usually be shot at better than ISO3200, f/2.8, 1/100th so it won't ever hurt there, 1/100th is FAR too slow

IF you guys post the settings you want me to set on my 7D, I'll make a video tonight! I guess I'll start shooting and place the lens cap back on and we can watch it drop to 4fps
