philber, yes, it's the current macro lens. Not sure about that second part. Can't remember seeing 'Zeiss 100mm f:2 MM' anywhere.

It's not really about OOF areas. Even with everything in focus the Contax 28/2.8 has a definative look. This on the 5DII at f/6.7:



That shot is a great example of the first two items on my list. Wonderful colour and microcontrast. It also shows that while IMHO the 3D look is mostly in the latter two items, the microcontrast in particular definitely delivers 3D on shots like this.

Great shots Peter. I assume when people talk about the Zeiss 100mm f:2 MM, they are talking about the Contax/Yashica mount 100mm f/2 lens with the later MM (multi-mode, which means it can do aperture and shutter speed modes) coupling. It is a beautiful lens, but not a macro. In the Contax/Yashica mount (and the N mount) the 100 macro was f/2.8.

Wow, all of the images on this thread are jaw dropping! As mentioned, the skills of the photographers play as big of the roll as the lenses.
