p.1 #1 · Major 7D focus issues

Well I happened to find a store that had a 7d in stock while away this weekend, Took a bunch of shots of whatever I saw, and tested the servo and video and such, when I got home and looked at the images nothing in sharp focus, so I've been playing around with it since Sunday , did every focus test , and them some, Micro adjusted both ways to the max in increments, tried 2 lenses so far , 28-135 and a 50mm, both with the same results nothing sharp, seems a major backfocus problem, with the servo even worse , (I'm shooting single point),, So about 10mins ago , thinking it could be a lens issue. I took the trusty, never failed ,best AF on a canon camera to date , beat to hell, half broken 1D , and what do you know, all images razor sharp as they always are,

I'm very dissappointed since I've heard good things in the beginning , now not hearing good things , and mine is junk . I stayed away from the 1D3 for these reasons, and it seems that this camera might be heading down that road now that more people are getting them and posting the flaws,

I've shot over 500 frames so far tesing and not one is in proper focus,It will be going back this weekend,

Come on Canon Wake the F' up,

With any product, no matter how good, there will always be a few defective units out there. Nothing to fear...just exchange it for a different one.

(I had a bad 35L once...second one was amazing...and the 35L is one you almost NEVER hear anything bad about...it just happens from time to time).

do you check your images @ 100 % in PS, they look all fine and dandy at like 50% ,( I only shoot raw also which I forgot to mention, so I get the largest, cleanest file,) but a 100%, OOF at focus point, The 1D I have and the 2 MKIIn's I had which I should have never sold, always razor sharp at 100%

Sounds like my 5DII, except it front focuses everything even at the maximum microadjustment. Sadly, I sent it in to Canon for this and manual focus adjustment. The AF was supposedly "electronically adjusted", but came back no different on my lenses. And now my viewfinder image is tilted

I often wonder if microadjust is mostly a feature for Canon to slap the cameras (and lenses) together without tight tolerances, then have the user adjust for it with MA.

My camera still needs another trip to Canon!

Mine is at the service center for the exact same problem you face. It's not a consistent front/back focus; it just goes all over the place. Will let you know how it goes. Sigh.

should not be that way, canon is really messing up, I just read in the past 5 mins online, about 8 posts with problems, from , errors', to batteries frying the camera itself, other focus issues, not good as now more are hitting the shelves, and since the major issue with the 1D3, you would think canon would make sure that these things were friggin perfect.

You do realize that you are comparing apples to oranges here. A 1D or a 1D MKII file at 100% is at way smaller magnification than a 7D file at 100%. I haven't bothered to do the math, but it is like comparing an 8 X 10 and an 11 X 14 size print to a 24 X 36 print. Yeah at the much larger magnification the 7D files don't look as sharp. I have a 50D which has almost as many pixels as the 7D. You should be able to get some images that are sharp at 100% magnification, but keep in mind the differences in print size that could be produced and specifically that a 7D file at 50% magnification would still produce a bigger print than either a 1D or a 1D MKII. Why don't you show us some samples and maybe we can help you sort out what is going on.

I've also read tons of wonderful reports about the 7D. Nobody can make a mass produced item perfect. It just isn't possible. Honda has consistently made the most reliable vehicles in the world...and trust me, there are lemons from Honda on every model. Chances are you won't get one, but somebody will...doesn't mean that the whole company is crap. There will always be a few that make it out with problems, especially in a machine as complex as a DSLR. Exchange your camera and move on. Stinks, but oh well.

Yeah they should be sharp, but just realize that when you expect the 7D to be as sharp at 100% as a 1D or a 1D MKII at 100% you are holding the 7D to a much, much higher standard. Also keep in mind that if the 7D files are as sharp at 50% as the 1D or 1D MKII files are at 100%, then the 7D will produce better prints of the same size than either of the other cameras.

I've shot HS Volleyball, Tennis and Football and have been absolutely blown away with the quality of the 7D in AF speed and accuracy...way better than my 1D2.

Oh brother!!! cars have issues also why not Canon? let's count all the perfect 7D first instead of listening to a few. Also I saw that post with the battery not the camera's fault, not Canon's fault they do not make the batteries

Please don't shoot the messengers. There apparently are either bad copies out there, possibly more then normal, or there is an inherent problem especially with servo modes, low light and busy backgrounds. When my 40D, 5DmkII and especially mkIIn can shoot more sharper images in servo mode then the 7D then something is wrong.
I am close to contacting Canon and sending mine in for repair.

In good light, single shot or servo modes, my camera is great.
