p.1 #1 · sports event photo selling question

This question is posted in Sports since it relates to a College sporting event. If another board is more appropriate, please feel free to move.

I posted this image to ask the question... Does anyone know if a ticketed spectator (me), can sell an image (this one), having been taken at the event. I had no media credentials. Obviously the image is not about football but is a represenation of the Band at the inaugural game of the stadium. I cannot find anything on the University's websites that address this at all.

My intent is to make the image available for print purchase to the members of the band. I am a parent of 2 band members. Are there licensing restrictions that would prevent me from doing that?

thanks in advance for your feedback...

You are likely going to need to get clearance or "licensing" from school officials to offer the image for sale .... especially considering it is a Big 10 school ... they like to have their fingers in everything that depicts the school or their programs ...

Like Butch says, there's too much in this photo that is identified with and owned by the school. They own and have specific rights to the school name, the stadium and its likeness, the mascot, the field, etc. No way you can rightfully sell this without the school's permission.

I thought Rich Clarkson had somewhat of a monopoly on collegiate photo... although I don't know the details as well as other may...

Have they asked the school? Will they not give you an answer? I don't know how anyone other than the school will be able to answer your questinos.

Ask the school.

My guess is that they'd have more of an issue of you using the name of the school and stadium in the caption than the photo itself.

I like this summarization (more geared towards selling photos of athletes instead of wide crowd scenes)...

Great shot.

Probably not.

Ask the school.

Did they finally decide to stop playing in that craphole of a dome? I shot one game in that mess and am glad of it.

Paul, Tim and Frank... Thanks for the comments. Yes, the dome (or Hump, as we used to call it), will only be home for the Vikings after this season... with the Twins' new "Target Field" opening next spring. I know I'm a Homer, but this new stadium really is a pretty good place to watch a game. Yesterday's game with #8 California was pretty loud and rockin when we tied it at 21 in the 3rd Quarter, before giving up 2 4th Q touchdowns.

This is off topic, but the concession stand folks don't have computers... each order taker literally has a calculator to add up your order total. Looks like they tried to shave some costs there.

I was pleased with the image. It was 6 shots on a nice overcast day stitched with PS3 photomerge.

The focus, of course, is the band... and I did e-mail the director a lowres version and asked him the question. But, he's probably not the guy to answer the licensing question. Would you suggest Athletics department then??

I'll let you know what I find out...
