On the contrary, think of the newbies you see shooting, if indoors, almost exclusively with flash (so no fast aperature needed there), and if outdoors f/5.6 is ok. And as far as focal length goes, I would think this is more appealing than 16-35,24-70 and 28-135. You have you wide to short tele covered.

Its not until you can't use flash or don't know how to that you HAVE to have fast glass, but with these high iso monsters of today if you halfway know your way around a dslr, these kit alternatives can surely get the shot. I simply stopped falling for the hype that "L" glass is the end all. Its not, same goes for the 1d juggerknots, they are sweet no doubt, but stop the once you go 1d you never go back, pleeeease! If you can't get the job done with a 20d, somethin is wrong. That's why prices are so inflated and new tech comes out every year, because the marketing gods have us dangling on a string. Don't take my statements "personally", just think about it for a min. And don't think I don't have my eye on the mkIII or the 7d for that matter, but I do realize it is just the consumer side of the brain, I honestly don't need or have to have em, I've just been tricked into thinking I do.

And the Beat goes on!

^ bingo. this lens hits all the targets for basic consumer do-almost-everything lens. more useful than a (also mediocre) 17-85 to a vast majority of users

the whining about the lens is strange... whine instead about canon's choice of tiny-sensor body in a $1700USD camera!

Not everyone needs nor wants a full frame body
In my view, the only lens now missing in Canon's line up is a fish eye

The Australian price for this lens is around $800 (AU$).

The 7D still represents a good value at its price point (in $US). Just two years ago the top-of-the-line "pro" model with a similar sensor size and performance specs cost $5K and had much worse high ISO noise. Today the closest competing product has lower resolution yet still costs more.

I would have preferred an APS-H or full frame sensor on the 7D too, but it would never be offered at anywhere near this price point, much as we would wish otherwise.

good value in the USA... i don't really see it... $600 upcharge for a real AF system vs 50D (or what would have been the 60D) ... WHOOP DE DOO.

i don't really see the value myself in USD (nevermind what looks like absurd overseas pricing). You have a $1700 body that can't even properly utilize a $1400 16-35L lens. Super lame.

Also the D700 can be found for $2100 at times which is closer to 2 years old and slaughters this camera in all features except 18MP crammed-in.

BTW garyvot, what $5k more pro model had a "similar sensor size" two years ago. .

video... ROTFLMAO. $600 upcharge from the 50D for video & the AF-system we expected 4 years ago in the xxD line.

For a Canon gear owner, you sure bitch more about Canon than the average Nikon trolls. Almost makes me wish Canon would announce another "disappointing" body just to piss you off even more...

But it will make a $5000 500L sing. You use the body designed for your purposes, I'll use the one designed for mine.

maybe, maybe not. time will tell.

no one objective would proclaim anything otherwise before it ships (my reference to 16-35 is to what 1.6x crop obliterates at the wide end FYI)

thanks for the advice "doc". you should prescribe "getting a life" for yourself based on your comments.

Not everyone purchasing items from a company is a zealot who who ignores things like pricing, performance and time-to-market decisions.

I can sympathize with your concerns about using your 16-35 on a 1.6x crop. When I switched from film to a 20D I regretted the effect on my 17-35. Eventually I bought a 10-22 and got on with my life. Now the wide shooters have the 5D series, and the tele shooters (will) have the 7D, so everybody's happy in Canon-land.

Actually, I think the 16-35 is a great range on APS-C. Pair it with a fast 50mm and an 85 and you have a solid kit for photojournalism or event work. The equivalent 24-70 / 85 / 135 kit on full frame is heavier and bulkier, and the camera body (Canon) is generally slower. If you add the 70-200, APS-C gives you a 320mm 2.8 equivelent at the long end without having to schlepp an actual 6lb 300 2.8 around.

Of course the iso performance of a crop vs full would still make that just a 320 f/4.

And yet here you still are... Reading your posts, seems like you have nothing but contempt for Canon's decisions, pricing and performance, so why haven't you moved to Nikon yet? Can't afford it? So why are you bitching about the only system you can afford to keep?

I'm not saying you have to be happy with Canon's offering, but since it's what you're stuck with, perhaps you should learn to live with it and curb the whinging, specially when it comes to the gears that you have never even used and/or owned.

The 28-135 with USM/ IS is a better deal than a 18-135 IS with no USM any day. The USM (edited) is worth it IMO. All in all they both are lower to lower-mid range lens. Guess people got to start somewhere, like I did, and that's where the manufacturers make their money. Throw in a kit lens for $200 extra then sell the remainder for hundreds more than they are worth. If I only knew what I know now, I would have got the 17-55 or 17-40 to start but oh well we all learn.

The 18-135 would be a great lens for red-carpet work, but I don't see it being better than the 18-200.

Most of the PJs that I worked carpets with who shot Canon either use a crop camera and a 18-200 or a 1 series and a 24-105 or a 28-200

Personally, I like my old glass. I shoot a 28-70 2.8 on a 5d and it works just fine for me

I have 7 Canon lenses including 3 L lenses, but I am still amazed how good and how versitile my Sigma 18/125 lens is. It is my favorite walk around/travel lens. When traveling with a 3 or 4 lens setup I usually end up taking 90% of my images with the 18/125. If the Canon 18/135 is as good it will be quite a useful lens.

Every time I am in a camera store, I see people buying lenses like this one. I don't want one, but there are plenty of people out there who want a lens that will do everything (even if it doesn't do anything *well*).

I'm thinking of getting one, as kit with the 7D.

18-135 kit also (aparently) has a 2nd battery too (and hood+uv filter).

$3550 vs $2900 for the kit(NZ$). 18-135 on its own is $950, so I can sell after if its no good.

Its that or a tamron 17-50f2.8 or prehaps the sigma 30/1.4 which isnt all that flash for a prime ...
