Sure, if this gets around the cost of the current 17-85 ($428 today on amazon), which it may be replacing, it would be much more attractive.

Has it hit the shelves yet? No? Then it's not a fact. All we know right now is that the pre-sale price is full MSRP. That doesn't mean that the pre-sale prices can't be adjusted later on.

Do you mean the Rebel T1i? Did that hit the shelves at MSRP? Because, that's not been out for a while and it's already below MSRP. From the blog entries I'm reading around, it was released at less than MSRP and it will continue to fall during its lifespan.

No I meant the 5DII, 17 TS-E and the 24II TS-E. As for the T1i, I can't recall if that sold for MSRP but it's a likely assumption (BTW, it only dropped $50)

Then you're ignoring the fact that EF-S lenses aren't the same as an ultrawide L-series TS lens or multi-thousand dollar full frame camera. They're exotic items that aren't meant for the general consumer. The 15-85 will be sold in any big box electronics store, whereas you have to go to camera stores for a TS lens (and even then, you may not find it).

As for the T1i, it was released at less than MSRP. The 15-85 is more in line with the T1i than the 5D2 or an ultrawide TS lens.

Canon is definitely taking a new approach to the look of their lenses. I didn't notice it at first with the two new TS lenses, but they're using a different, larger font.

They appear to have also omitted the USM gold ring. The focal length numbers are now sitting on a black area instead of a gray area that EF-S lenses all had.

I am just a dumb beginner and will likely never be much more. My interest is in landscapes and close-ups. This lens interests me. I have been looking for an upgrade from my kit lens. Most of my pictures are while hiking or backpacking and not from the side of the road. I would rather carry a few quality zooms than have a trunk full of L primes. I was looking at the 24-105 L but it isn't wide enough. That would leave me having to add the 10-22 for the wide end and would necessitate some frequent lens changing. Even with high pricing this lens could save me some money and weight. I will just have to wait and see how the IQ turns out and what the street price turns out to be. (Any guesses on street price?)

I have a 40D and some lenses for different purposes: from landscape to macro including portrait and wildlife (some portraits are wild too!). My current lens line up is OK but I find myself always using either 10-22 or 70-200 (or 100-400) instead of what suposed to be my WA lens: 24-105L...I am planning to go FF one day but was not convinced by 5d2. Since I sold my 17-85, I am craving of a WA lens...I will consider this one carrefully....but I am not rushing for it.

The 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor is currently $610 at B&H, for what it's worth. We'll have to see what the price does post-introduction, and if it gets close to the Nikkor.

What's important about this lens is the 24mm-equivalent FOV at the wide end. For some, that means not also having to carrry a 10-22.

I agree it would have been nice to see a 15-70mm f/4 constant aperture lens, ala the 24-105L.

NIKKOR 16-85 VR MSRP is $789 and the street price is now $610.
Canon 15-85 IS MSRP is $799 and the street price will no doubt keep getting lower... and lower...

Waaaaay too much money for this lens. I see used 17-55 f/2.8 IS lenses sell here for $850 regularly!!

I'd get a used 17-55 f/2.8 or the "old" 18-55 IS instead.

It's difficult to directly compare Nikon and Canon lenses. E.g. the Canon 100mm F/2 is ~$420 new. The Nikon 105mm F/2 is ~$1080

That 16-85 is quite good.

16 mm is about the same as 15 mm on the smaller Canon sensor.
