p.3 #1 · EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS master thread

I have a 40D and some lenses for different purposes: from landscape to macro including portrait and wildlife (some portraits are wild too!). My current lens line up is OK but I find myself always using either 10-22 or 70-200 (or 100-400) instead of what suposed to be my WA lens: 24-105L...I am planning to go FF one day but was not convinced by 5d2. Since I sold my 17-85, I am craving of a WA lens...I will consider this one carrefully....but I am not rushing for it.

The 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor is currently $610 at B&H, for what it's worth. We'll have to see what the price does post-introduction, and if it gets close to the Nikkor.

What's important about this lens is the 24mm-equivalent FOV at the wide end. For some, that means not also having to carrry a 10-22.

I agree it would have been nice to see a 15-70mm f/4 constant aperture lens, ala the 24-105L.

NIKKOR 16-85 VR MSRP is $789 and the street price is now $610.
Canon 15-85 IS MSRP is $799 and the street price will no doubt keep getting lower... and lower...

Waaaaay too much money for this lens. I see used 17-55 f/2.8 IS lenses sell here for $850 regularly!!

I'd get a used 17-55 f/2.8 or the "old" 18-55 IS instead.

It's difficult to directly compare Nikon and Canon lenses. E.g. the Canon 100mm F/2 is ~$420 new. The Nikon 105mm F/2 is ~$1080

Here's a 17-55 f/2.8 IS in the B&S for $825!!.....

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/803275

You'd have to be crazy to pay $800 for this new lens IMO.

I agree although you would have to be even more crazy to pay 759 for a new 17-85...albeit this is CND

That 16-85 is quite good. 16 mm is about the same as 15 mm on the smaller Canon sensor.

Canon will make you wait two months for the hood, and they are going to keep the stock low to keep the hood price up at $80. Hope the ebay guys can roll out a cheap hood fast enough so that you won't be hoodless for Christmas.

I think people are missing the point of how much the currency markets are affecting this at the moment.

The £ and $ have both fallen over the past 6 months killing the price of lenses. Look at some of the price tracking websites and you can see how much the price of say a 70-200 F4 IS has gone up. In the UK last year it was as little as £649 and when we could get $2 to £1, fast forward to today its retailing at £941, only due to currency fluctuations, nothing else.

The US isn't immune to this either but relative to the YEN or HKD for instance both have not moved that much but UK and US economies have and thus have our currencies.

We can all blame Canon but in reality its not them to blame at all, if the USD$ and UKP$ and € Euro for that matter get stronger then expect the lens prices to drop, at the moment however with economies slow to recover that is looking a way off.

Im sure currencies greatly effect product pricing but using your logic the CND dollar has risen substantially to the american and Euro but yet the price differences between the USA and Canada have gone in the opposite direction on these latest releases... BTW prices in NEW YORK are generally the cheapest prices around....if one were to check camera prices in japan you would see its cheaper to buy it in US than where its made.

geez I know I'm an armchair designer but what gives with releasing variable aperture lenses all the time? Is it so hard to do a constant f/4 or something instead? It's a nightmare to use Manual mode with these lenses

A constant f/4 lens would be far too practical, though a bit more expensive.

Hmm, you've had an easy life if using variable aperture lenses in M mode qualifies as a nightmare! I'd consider losing job, wife and house an actual nightmare. Having to move a dial a click once in a while is basically nuttin'

This is purely a consumer lens and although I suspect it will be a good consumer lens, it is very pricey for the intended market. Some backpackers will pick one up for good reason but it isn't a particularly good travel lens because of its slow, variable speed and high price. Looks like a 2 lens set-up using the 10-22 is still the better way to go for many people.

It's just a figure of speech. When someone says "I'm famished" for example, they don't literally mean they are as hungry and starved as kids in third world nations. Or when someone says "I'm dead" when they have messed up something, obviously this doesn't quite compare to actually being in the morgue - or worse.

The currency differences have to between say the CND and the YEN or USD and the YEN / HKD /RNB. USD and CND won't affect prices a jot unless it comes into the US first and then goes to Canada and gets converted twice, this is partly whats happening in the UK. It goes into the Euro then to the pound, meaning it costs that bit more than it could do.

Hah, now crop users also have their 24-70L vs 24-105L dilemma

Unfortunately that isn't quite true. We have a 28-90 2.8 vs. 24-135 3.5-5.6 dilemma. Do I give up some key wide angle coverage and still shell out 1K, or do I spend only slightly less for the extra coverage without any speed?

Neither choice is quite good enough.

I'll take speed over range any time. Actually, I did just that replacing 24-105 for 17-55. Also remember that keeping the speed and prolonging the range results in a lens which is both heavier and more expensive, prices not all are willing to take.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Why do people complain about the price of the APS-C equivalent to 24-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS when it is less expensive than the actual lens 24-105 f/4 IS
