p.1 #1 · question on that little plastic LCD cover

Is the little LCD cover necessary? Is the LCD prone to scratching? I never used one on my Pentax for 3 years, and the lcd is still as nice as the day I got it. I just don't want to remove the thing if its going to bugger my lcd on my D300. It (the cover, not the LCD) is already covered with little scratches and I find it makes reviewing more difficult in harsh light.

Thanks,
Eric

I toss mine the day the body's delivered. If you're concerned about scratches, the GGS protectors are cheap
and pretty nice alternatives. The "white" plastic looks like crap on the D3, hell...ANY body for that matter.

The D3's screen is tempered glass, so, it is hard to scratch. BTW, Nikon didn't include that plastic thing when I bought mine, late '07. Surprised they started to include it.

Do you use the plastic protector on your D300? I'm under the impression that its LCD is similar to the D2X series, which can be scratched much easier than a D3.

The LCD scratched fairly easily on my D40. Just the in and out of a bag motion will cause scratches over time. I keep the protectors on the D80 and D90, it differently helps. The D3's glass cover is much harder to scratch, its just like the iPhone.

GGS protector is a tempered glass cover that fits on top of the LCD It attaches with a pressure sensitive adhesive and can be removed. You can find them on ebay The set (top lcd and back lcd) cost about $12.00 plus shipping. I have a set on my D200 and they are scratch free after a years use.

The D300 LCD is also tempered glass. I take the covers off my cameras as soon as they come out of the box, and I've never had a scratch.

The D300's and D700's screens are also covered in tempered glass as well as the D3(x). My camera screen looks a helluva lot better than my iPhone.

i tripped and fell with my D90, scratched the screen up... swore i'd start usign the protectors.

as soon as i got here (iraq), the protector broke off my D700.
The other night, a small rock bounced off the screen and chipped it.

I used mine on my D200 until my bag fell over and it broke. Haven't bothered to replace it.

How do you remove the GGS protectors ? I have one for an LX3, but it came with no instructions... way better than the film protectors.

Dental floss. Dead serious.

Does it leave a residue of glue?

I've been using my GGS protector for over a year now. I've found that the very edges of the corners on the GGS protector (at least the one on the back LCD) tend to chip off or break off, but it doesn't really affect the functionality at all. Just surprised that they did so.

Haven't heard other reports of this but it's happened on two protectors for me. Really, though, it has zero effect on the protection aspect and even at only $8 apiece, I haven't bothered to replace it if that tells you anything.

Other than that, they're great. Cheap protection, looks like it came from the factory that way, very little glare... Maybe I'm just compulsive, but tempered glass or not, I'd rather have a layer of protection there.

Wow, just straight on, work the floss between the two pieces of glass ? Is residual adhesive easy to remove ?

binary_visions, a few of the corners on the GGS I have on my LX3 also chipped.
