p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · ADRL drags in St. Louis

On a weekend off, I decided to head up to Gateway International Raceway to use some free tickets to attend the ADRL drag races being held. I've not shot drag racing before and didn't apply for media access, just took a couple of friends on Friday night and shot from the stands. Made for an interesting night, and worked on some panning, which apparently I really stink at. But I thought I'd post a few anyway from the night.

And just for giggles one of my son sitting next to one of the rear tires off one of these cars.

When shooting drag racing how low do you guys go to get pans and still end up with a decent keeper rate? Once I got below 1/250th my keeper rate dropped considerably, but normally I can pan down much lower then that, but for some reason couldn't with these. Thanks for looking.

Well I'll assume 50 views and no comments tells me I really need some work on my photos, or maybe that I'm just not part of the boys club here that allows people to comment on your work. Oh well.

Matt - I've been taking drag racing photos for publications and web sites for some 35 years and if I'd taken those I'd be very happy. I do know guys that can pan down to a 1/15th and keep them sharp but I'm like you I've got very few keepers under 1/250th. I am in the news business so I need take documentary shots to illustrate a story and that is usually over 1/500th. Panning is all well and good but one sharp killer crash shot means more to me than 10 sharp pans and 200 not so good ones. One of the best at this is regular poster, Mark Rebilas who mainly shoots up to 1/4000th of a second- you could worse than look here

I wish you well with it.

Thanks for the comment Jon Van Daal. I appreciate it. And I certainly agree that panning has its place as well as does stop action. I do follow Mark's blog and I have seen some of his drag racing work, definitely inspiring work.

Matt, I did not see your topic until now. Your photos look great and what kind of gear are you using? Have you ever shot between the cars at the signal?

( a little dangerous but interesting!)

ON the boys club that you mentioned, I noticed that in here too and may have 70-90 looks and not get a single post. I guess we need the latest and great of gear to receive comments.

Thanks Canonet, I was using a 1DMKIII and a 70-200 from the stands. As I said I didn't apply for media credentials as I would not have really been working and there are pro's there who would have been. I know some people use their press credentials to get them in places, but I'm not one of them guys. I respect my card and don't abuse it. I have been hired later in the year by a couple of local teams to shoot for them at a bigger meet so I figured since I've never shot there this would be a good way to test what I need to take with me and what shutter speeds I could work with. Thanks for the comment, and cool shot.

Matt, I know folks who have media credentials and use them to get into anything. I am a credentialed photog for a small paper and the one time I misuse the pass, I'm in trouble.

The Vega pic was due to someone hiring me to shoot their car on the strip. Minutes after that happened, andI left that part of the track, an axle from a V8 powered S10 flew into that area and caused havoc.

A starter for F-stop would be f8-f11 and maybe 1/40-1/60 sec depending on your ASA setting. The longer the shutter speed, the more blur effect in the background similar to this picture:

Hi Matt, this is a nice set! can I ask what ISO you were shooting in the first few images and if they were hand held were you using a monopod?
Thanks-Dominic

1-2-4 are all 3200ISO. 3 is 1600 ISO. and the last two action are 800ISO. All were shot handheld from the stands. Thanks
