I like my Flipit and its lightweight and compact size. The problem I've had with it is the velcro is separating from the rubber backing. I contacted Joe Demb and was told to send it in. My only problem is that I use it so often that I would have a hard time without it while it is being repaired.

...I have three flip-it's in different sizes...love 'em all. I've crammed them in camera bags next to lenses, and flashes...never a "warp" problem or anything else. In fact I have literally "worn out" my large one and I was able to get a new one from Joe, and re-installed it on the "hinge" just fine...it's like new. The flip-its are an excellent product, that deliver excellent results.

Steve, Please try the boiling water solution. You can do it an unlimited number of times. I test a material in a heat box with an oven thermometer. When I report to the manufacturer that warping starts to occur at about 125 degrees, he laughs and says that no one works in an environment over 120 degrees, at that temp all sorts of things start to fail, & blah blah blah. The fact is that obviously there are conditions, like the dashboard of a car, etc. where that temp is reached. Molecules don't lie. Like most people I start with my own experience and note that this stuff never warped on me in about 8 years of usage. It is necessary at some point to get over myself, listen to people like you, and acknowledge that I may have to abandon a couple of thousand dollars of stock on a shelf and just move on to something (hopefully) better. Ultimately, you folks are my bosses....Show more →
oh i have no real issues about it. its just one of those things and i just flex it back into position when i "need" to. as to the 120F temp environ well i don't suggest the middle east as a working location then. i have been in it higher and its not what i call pleasant. . i'll boil it up and make some soup.

Indeed, some folks don't understand that exposing a lightweight piece of thermoplastic to heat and warping load will cause... warping.
Joe, for my money I'll stick with the lightweight material you're using now. With emphasis on the lightweight. I've worked with enough heavy flash diffusers to know I don't want them. Aside from its wonderful bounce/diffusion capabilities the Flip-it's strengths are its lightweight, ease of adjustment, and portability.

if its packed away in a bag for a bit of time and a curve is induced by an outside force over that time it will take that shape regardless of the median temp being average comfort range for the user.

I picked up a Sigma 530 Super flash unit and a Demb Flip It diffuser/reflector. I can't believe I've been shooting photos without a hot shoe flash for so long! The quality of light is unbelievably better than I could imagine. For anybody on the fence on whether to save some money on a flash unit, no worries. This flash rocks! Granted I'm a flash noob but it does the job. Also the Demb Flip It diffuser/reflector is awesome!!! Thank you Joe! These are all taken with my Canon 30D and Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8
This is the first shot I took with my new setup. My 13 yr old Chow/Lab puppy Spicer! Slight PP.

These are all straight out of camera so you can see the quality of light.
This is my 7 month young niece who we just met for the first time since she lives in Ohio.

Not sure what happened to #2 and #3. ? I've tried to fix it several times and the photos simply won't show up for some reason. Any idea what I did wrong Thanks! I'm going to just try and post them again below.

Just got my Demb Big Flip-it. It's amazing how simple it is and constructed from such inexpensive material. One might think that at $29.95 it's a lot of money for such material, but I'm sure it will pay back in more keepers (with no hot shadows).
On your family portrait, how did you position the flash unit and white reflector? I'm guessing flash straight up and reflector at about 45 degrees?
Incidentally I read in another forum about someone's homemade diffuser (he called it the AK49 because the material only cost .49 cents). I made one and the results were pleasantly surprising. With a little more practice, it could be amazing.

The velcro strap is now a material called Velstretch. You pull it out hard, then wrap and stick it down for a super strong hold. It is completely modular. If you ever want to replace it, you just discard the first one & use another. If you want to adapt it to an older product, the kit is 5 bucks.
