p.1 #1 · More practice w/ 300mm f2.8

A while back I was able to get some time at Radio Road to get more practice with my new lens. Here's a few:

1-3. Ruddy duck (#3 especially for Nello)

David

Some very nice shots here and the ducklings are adorable!! IMHO, I do suggest that you brighten the harsh shadows a bit to bring out the detail.

best

Hi David,
Very nice shots. I agree w/ Mike here. Plus, most are a bit too centered for comp. Excellent IFs in #7 and 8.

Nice practice set! I like #4 the best because the duckling is cute and the water ripples are perfect.

Mike and Dan, I'll work on those shadows a bit. but I screwed up on that shoot and had the camera in SMALL JPEG! (I had just shot some pics for some stuff I was selling and forgot to reset it to RAW). Boy, was I pi***d when I got home and saw that. Anyway, I'll give it a try.

Dan, I also thought they were a bit too centered. Which way should they be moved. Do I want more space in front of the bird, to fly/move into, or behind it. And how about vertical location? What about the ducklings, where there's nothing but h20?

Nice job on these David !

The others have made some great suggestions. To answer part of your questions, on the comp you want to leave more room in front of the bird, space for them to look into/swim into. On the first duckling, crop some off of the bottom and the right. Just mess around with it and see what you like.

Great series...nicely done! I agree about a little cropping for image placement. On 1,2,4,6 and 7 I would crop a little off the top and the right side. Just MHO! Thanks for sharing!

Great! Wish Ruddys had their full plumage when they are in my neck of the woods.

Very nice.... that lens really has potential.

#4 is really adorable and the background and image in #8 is sweet!

I like the ducks better, but I think the water is too bright. I may try to tone down the h20 somewhat. I also see how the re-cropping improved them.

Thanks Noelle

Thank you Ant. I really like RR once I found it. I heard about it at a seminar and tried it out. Easy to get to and lots of variety. And you can get really close to the birds, too. Let me know when you want to go!
