Will the Nikon TC-14E 1.4x II Teleconverter autofocus smoothly mounted on a
Nikon 300 f4 AFS lens?
Thanks,
Bob

Yes, it is the exact setup I use.

Definitely. It does so on my D80, so a D300 would probably do even better. Its a great reach for the money.

Good point Glenn, the D300 should be a great fit. I use the combo with a D90.

Hi Lisa.
Will that converter, focus your older 300 F4 AF lens ?
Thanks

**In response to TC 14EII working with the NON Af-S version (older version of the 300mm f/4). I just tried to see if it would match with it, but I can't get it to fit and I don't want to force it.

The AF-S TCs have a tab that prevents them being mounted on earlier, non-AF-S lenses. There's a list of compatible lenses on the Nikon website. The tab can be filed off, but that's a destructive mod.

They won't AF, anyway, Kingfish. They don't support screw-drive AF lenses.

(edited for clarity -- it might have been unclear who I was responding to).

all Nikon's latest TC's work on the 300 AF-S lens without any modifications.

the 1.4x works best with this lens but the 1.7x works surprisingly well also. I have not tried the 2x yet.

No, but a Kenco will.

That converter will only work on AFS lenses. So don't even bother trying with AFD lenses

Don't bother with the 2x. The difference between it and cropping the 1.7x is marginal.

My experience is the 2x kills a surprising amount more image data than the 1.7x does - much more so than one would expect for the relatively small increase in focal length.

The 1.7x, though, is great. Nice way to hit 500mm on a budget. And you get a killer sharp, beautiful 300mm f/4 when you don't need that long focal length.

The 2X makes a great paperweight.

I also use the 1.7 on my AFS 300/4.0 & it does a very good job. Out in the boonies it will sometime search a little, but it is very sharp(surprisingly so).

I haven't tried the 1.4X, as I have the 1.7X and 2X TC's. The 1.7X is a bit slow in low light, but otherwise works great. Trying the 1.7X with the 300 f/4 AF-S on birds in the early morning light was unsuccessful for me, as the lens just took too long to focus. Well, that and the fact that I'm most likely lousy shooting birds in the early morning light with a 510mm f/6.3 lens, but I prefer to blame it on the equipment!

The 2X has never been on my 300, though I love it on the 70-200 f/2.8. Still, I prefer the 1.7X, though I'm not sure if that is more due to everyone here constantly ragging on what a lousy piece of glass the 2X is - I'd always enjoyed it before spending a lot of time on FM.

For the money and reach, the 1.7X is an amazing TC though. I understand the 1.4X is even better in IQ than the 1.7X, and that is saying something.
