p.1 #1 · Any wedding photographers here use 3D tracking?

I was just wondering if anyone here uses continuous focusing/dynamic focusing/3D tracking with wedding photography? I'm talking as opposed to using AF and recompose with single point AF. Maybe with the couple walking down the isle, the first dance, etc. Would this give better results than if you were to use focus and recompose technique, with a 50mm 1.4 at 1.4 say? Would like to hear your thoughts.

I can't speak towards the 3D since I haven't used it but I always select my af points myself as opposed to a 50 1.4 where you begin to have the problem of possibly introducing focus shift with focus recompose.

So you mean if you're shooting a portrait orientated shot of the first dance, you just select a focus point further towards the top of the frame. I suppose that's an easy fix to focus shift. Still interested to see if anyone uses 3D tracking here

I used 3d tracking for the first dance sequence and it had no problem tracking even with the couple turning around in circles.

Sure thing I'm glad I didn't get the 70-200 instead of the D700 though. I am really liking my 70-300 on FF for street and candid. There isn't the same reach as on my D80, but the results are plenty sharp (and I don't have to think twice about upping the Iso whereas I started seeing noise at Iso 400 on my D80) and I'm really enjoying the 24-70 on it too.

Btw I also shoot dance and 3d tracking was a whole lot of fun to watch. The little red squares danced across the screen accurately as the subject went behind various objects and other dancers in similar dress.
